Hyperthyroidism is a thyroid disorder that occurs due to the overactive functioning of the thyroid gland. In this condition the thyroid gland produces more amounts of thyroid hormones than the basic requirement of the body. Basically our thyroid gland is required to secrete T3 and T4 named hormones to regulate the metabolism, the rate at which the body burns the food to produce energy.

The most common cause behind hyperthyroidism is an autoimmune disease called Grave’s disease. This is found in most cases of pregnancy where the antibodies start reacting against the thyroid cells and tissues only. This dysfunction results in increasing the number of hormones being produced. Symptoms of Grave’s disease are enlargement of the thyroid gland and subsequently the neck, eyes and skin problems.

Though all the thyroid diseases can attack any person but they are frequently diagnosed more among women than men. Pregnant women get affected due to which the chances of miscarriage, preterm birth and low birth weight increases. Hyperthyroidism increases stress, hypertension and problems of blood pressure and increased heart rates in them.

Thyroid storm is one of the most severe conditions of the hyperthyroidism that creates major complications during pregnancy. Symptoms of these problems are diarrhea, fluctuations in heart rates, vomiting, severe dehydration, very high fever and nervousness. This disease triggers so badly that the person can even die.

Sometimes women get an increased risk of infection during pregnancy if the treatment for curing hyperthyroidism is not given on time. Deficiency of Iodine and raised levels of blood pressure are common problems found in women while suffering from this disease.

Infected mother may transfer the disease to the baby that also increases the risk of premature delivery and insufficient growth of the baby. Sometimes doctors recommend the intake of antibiotics for treating this disease but chemical drugs can directly affect the new born and the fetus.

Anti-thyroid treatments like methimazole and propylthiouracil are suggested as they provide nutritional milk during breast feeding. By taking them most of the symptoms get resolved in a shorter span of time. But do not forget to consult your physician before stating these medications. Generally Radioactive iodine therapy is used to treating hyperthyroidism but pregnant women cannot use this treatment. If the problem persists for a longer period of time only surgery can cure the problem effectively.

Infants should be taken under thorough testing and scanning for detecting the viruses that might not have passed from the suffering mother.

Hormonal changes is the basic cause behind most of the thyroid diseases especially in pregnant women, therefore start using natural supplements as soon as possible to avoid any risk getting transferred to you newly born child.
