Most of the thyroid problems are directly associated with the improper functioning of the thyroid gland in producing right amount of hormones. Our bodies require three types of hormones that help in performing different bodily actions. The required hormones are T3, T4 and TSH, the thyroid stimulating hormones. Either the amount of hormones produced increases or decreases, both these conditions result in causing diseases like hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, goiter and even thyroid carcinoma or cancer.
Detecting a thyroid disorder is a difficult task as most of its symptoms collide with carious other diseases. Many time even doctors are not able to diagnose the problem easily and start giving treatments that arouses more difficulties than curing the disease.
Blood test examination is the best process to detect the levels of hormones inside the body. They are also called thyroid function tests that show whether the thyroid gland is generating an increased or a decreased level of thyroid hormones.
Ultrasound scanning is recommended to detect the inflammation of the gland. Other tests that are used for proper imaging of the inside structure are Radioactive iodine scanning, Nuclear scanning, Magnetic resonance scanning and CT scan( its is used for checking thyroid nodules and goiter).
Thyrotropin stimulating hormones test: This test is used to detect the level of thyroid stimulating hormones present inside the blood stream. A high level of TSH shows that a person is suffering from hypothyroidism and a low level of TSH signifies the condition of hyperthyroidism.
Thryroxine or T4 test which is also called as serum thyroxine: This is very commonly used for checking the level of T4 hormones. Over activity of this hormone is an evidence for the condition of hyperthyroidism. This test is suggested during pregnancy by the gynecologists.
Iodine testing: It is used for detecting the level of iodine in the body. If a body is found to be iodine deficit, the person might be suffering from thyroid goiter or can be found at its initial stages.
Testing of the saliva and urine is sometimes recommended for checking various thyroid functions.
Biopsy of the thyroid is used for checking nodules or lumps in the gland. This is done using a fine needle aspiration recommended by FNA which is inserted inside the gland and the infected lumps or cells are taken for further detection. This procedure is specially used for detecting cancer.
Do not ever choose to undergo any test before consulting your doctor as the detection procedure depends upon the symptoms, causes and the severity of the disease that is not possible to be evaluated by the patient himself.
