Now a days hair grafting has become a common mode of hair loss treatment. With the advancement of cosmetic surgery, people suffering from hair loss go for hair grafting for re-growth of hair effectively. The surgical procedure includes the grafting of strips of hair from the donor area of the scalp to the recipient incisions of the hair. Hair grafting is mainly done to treat male pattern of baldness. Before conducting the operation certified doctors make a thorough study of the patient’s history and the quality of existing hair in the donor part or the permanent hair region of the scalp.

The process of hair grafting is quite complex and surgeons who carry out the operation are well trained and experienced enough to perform the operation for a long period of time with immense patience and dexterity. In the year 2007, about 200,000 hair transplants were carried out across the world and majority of the operations were taken place in USA. At present there are mainly two types of hair grafting that are done for hair fall treatment, Strip Harvesting Technique and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) Technique.

Strip Harvesting Technique – In this procedure of hair grafting the long strips of hair bearing huge groups of hair are removed from the donor part of the scalp. The part of the skin is then divided into smaller units of hair follicles containing around 1 to 4 hairs.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) Technique – This technique of hair grafting involves transferring of one follicular unit after another from the donor area to the recipient part of the head. Though generally the follicle units are taken from the permanent area of the scalp but hairs are also taken from the chest, legs or beard region of the patient. The graft punch normally varies from 0.5mm to 1mm in diameter.

Hair grafting will certainly help you to conceal your bald but there can be several side effects too.

  • The hair that will grow in the recipient area can be quite different in appearance and texture from the rest of the hair.
  • The hair in the bald region will be of poor growth.
  • The surgery may leave temporary or permanent scars.
  • Success rate differs from one individual to another depending upon the number of the existing hair in the permanent region.
  • A patient may undergo post operative aching and throbbing sensation which can be reduced by taking pain killers.
  • The patient may experience permanent or temporary shock loss.

You are always advised to get an idea of the surgical procedure from the surgeon before going for the operation. The best possible source for information regarding hair grafting will surely be a good authentic medical book dealing with weight loss.
