 Hormonal Hair loss

Hormones can stimulate hair growth and also cause hair loss. Change in the hormonal levels of the body has a direct impact on hair loss. Hair loss is caused by the hormone androgen DHT, or Dihydrotestosterone. It is known that in the future, gene therapy will be able to alter the genes to stop the follicles from being affected by DHT.

 Childbirth
After pregnancy, loss of hair occurs in many women. This is caused due to entering of the hair into the resting (telogen) phase. This can last up to 1-6months. This condition is also caused by the hormonal changes after a pregnancy.

 Birth Control Pills

Women having a genetic tendency to suffer from Androgenic Alopecia (hair loss) can be affected by taking birth control pills. The hormonal changes can trigger androgenic alopecia.

 Disease or Illness

Our hair follicle is very sensitive and it responds to the imbalances in the body. Hair loss causes by disease or illness is temporary. Illness like high fever, severe infection, and severe flu can cause hair loss.

Thyroid Disease

Sometimes, cases of overactive thyroid as well as underactive thyroid can cause hair loss. This disease can be diagnosed with the help of proper laboratory tests. Hair loss associated with this can be reversed with correct treatment.

Deficient Diet

People with low protein diets, or abnormal eating habits, develop protein malnutrition. To save protein of the body, our body shifts growing hair into the resting phase. This can result into hair loss. This condition can be prevented by taking proper amount of protein.

Medications

Some prescription drugs may result into temporary hair loss in people. These medicines are related to diseases like gout, arthritis, heart problems, depression, blood thinner, high blood pressure, etc. High doses of vitamin A also result in hair loss.

Cancer Treatments

Treatments like chemotherapy and radiation can also cause hair loss. These treatments stop hair cells from dividing. As a result, hairs become thin and break off. Patients can lose up to 90 % of their hair. This hair will regrow as the treatment ends.

Low Serum Iron

Iron deficiency rarely produces hair loss. Some people don't take iron containing food in their diets and this can lead to hair loss. Women with heavy menstrual periods may develop iron deficiency. This low iron problem can be diagnosed in laboratory tests and corrected by taking iron pills.

Stress
Stress can also result in hair loss. Stress may trigger the beginning of genetic hair loss or androgenic hair loss.
