Thinning of hair is mainly caused due to the effect of the secretion of the male hormone DHT. Since the hormone is dominant in males, men tend to lose hair more rapidly than women. Even though the society accepts male baldness as a common symptom for all aged men, women have to undergo a great deal of embarrassment if their body is sensitive to the hormone DHT as a result of which they experience thinning of hair.

Thinning of hair may occur in both men and women. You may check out the following symptoms of hair loss in men and women respectively.

Male Pattern Baldness (MPB) – At first, the hair at the temple starts thinning out and the hair line gradually recedes back in the form of an ‘M’ shape or a horse shoe shape. The hair of the crown part stops growing and turns flaky and un-pigmented.

Female Pattern of Baldness (FPB) – The signs of thinning hair of women is different from men. Women mainly undergo hair loss from the age of 30 and the process of thinning of hair becomes more prevalent after the age of 40 or the post menopausal period. Women lose hair uniformly unlike men as their hair loss mainly takes place in the crown part of the head. About 20 million American women experience this type of hair loss pattern.

The above two forms of hair loss are the most common among human beings. There are also other types of hair loss processes varying according to causes of hair loss. They are:

Due to the disorder called alopecia areata, individuals, mostly children develop small patches of baldness on the crown of the head.

Alopecia Universalis causes complete loss of hair of entire body including eyebrows. The scalp is mainly characterized by incomplete growth of hair and broken hair mostly in the crown part. Excess stretching and twisting of hair may also lead to the formation of patches of baldness; this condition is known as trichotillomania.

Complete baldness can be the symptom associated with suffering through chronic illness, under medicinal treatments for anemia, stress or pregnancy or the condition called telogen effluvium.
