Almost more than 50% of the total male population in America experiences baldness and thinning of hair. More than 90% of men’s thinning hair process is due to the condition called Androgenic alopecia. The rate of hair loss due to Androgenic alopecia varies from one race to another. 50% to 80% men of the Caucasoid race undergo the pattern of baldness while the percentage is just the half in case of men belonging to the south east Asian countries. Americans of African origin are competitively less affected by the incidence of baldness.
The life cycle of normal hair consists of mainly four stages. When the growing stage or the hair is shortened or the size of the hair follicle reduces under the influence of the androgen hormones, men tend to experience thinning of hair and ultimately complete baldness.
Male dominant hormones that are responsible for controlling the masculine characteristics of a human body are the main cause of hair loss. An enzyme named 5-alpha-reductase chemically reacts with the hormone testosterone in order to convert it into another hormone called DHT. The DHT has the capacity to combine with the male hormone receptor of the follicle. This results shrinking of the hair follicle, reduced hair activity which in turn lead to slow growth of the hair and reduced diameter of the hair shaft.
There are several men who experience rapid loss of hair compared to other men. It is because men who are subjected to greater loss of hair have more mount of enzyme called the 5-alpha-reductase and extremely sensitive male hormone receptor. Apart from Androgenic alopecia men’s thinning hair can also be caused due to other disorders. The following are some of the other causes behind hair loss in men.
Alopecia Aretea – This condition is the result of the autoimmune system of the body. The disorder is characterized by patchy hair loss in different parts of the scalp.
Alopecia Totalis – This condition results complete loss of hair.
Alopecia Universalis – The entire body including the scalp loses hair under the influence of the hair.
Traction Alopecia – This condition occurs when the hair is subjected to excess physical stress.
Anagen Effluvium – Individuals who are subjected to high dosage of medicines and treatments to cure fatal diseases, tend to lose hair due to the condition called Anagen Effluvium. Treatments like chemotherapy can cause such hair loss disorders.
