Almost every male scalp undergoes the male pattern of baldness. The male pattern of baldness occurs due to some hormonal interference called the androgenetic alopecia or alopecia androgenetica. This phenomenon of balding is common among human males, chimpanzees and orangutans. The degree of this hormonal activity can be influenced by genetic transference too. If the father of an individual experiences the hair loss, the individual is also likely to be affected by it.

The male form of balding is due to the secretion of the hormone DHT. The male hormone named Testosterone is converted into dihydrotestosterone by an enzyme present in the hair follicles named 5-alpha reductase. When the male hormone receptors of the hair follicles come in contact with the DHT, falling of hair takes place.

The male pattern baldness is characterized by the process of hair thinning at the frontal scalp. The hair line of the temple also recedes backwards in the form of M or in the shape of a horse shoe. The following are the characteristic related to the process of thinning of hair in pattern of balding in men.

  • When the follicles get affected by the hormone called DHT it shrinks and the size of the follicle becomes small.
  • The shaft of the new hair that grows in place of the old fallen hair grows thinner as the hair follicle starts shrinking.
  • The normal growing stage of a hair before going to the resting stage is around 4 to 5 years. During the process of balding the growing stage reduces to less than three years.
  • When the balding process is at the prime stage the number of hair follicles become quite less and the new hair that grows in the hair follicles barely grows that tall enough to grow out from the skin surface.

There is actually no perfect treatment for balding. This pattern of balding has a permanent effect and barely responds to the therapeutic medicines. There are only two hair treatment drugs available in the market that have cleared the FDI approval process. Rogaine containing the substance called minoxidil is a topical gel while Propecia constituting the substance finasteride is an oral drug. Both are effective in reducing hair loss and even sometimes regrwoth of hair as long as they are applied. You will get to know more about hair treatment therapy from good medical books and journals. There are books like How To Naturally Regrow Lost Hair in 15 Min. a Day that will provide you perfect ways care for your hair.
