Toenail fungus affects almost more than half of the population. The fungus is actually an anaerobic organism that thrives under damp and dark conditions. The fungus growing on the nail bed gradually multiplies and spreads across the nail. The affected nail if left untreated gets completely damaged with the advancement of the disease. The fungus feeds itself on the keratin, a complex protein and eventually it destroys the entire keratin structure of the nail and moves on to the adjacent nails. There are various types of toenail infection, Distal/Lateral Subungual Onychomycosis, Proximal Subungual Onychomycosis, Candidal Onychomycosis, Total Dystrophic Onychomycosis and Superficial White Onychomycosis or white toenail fungus.

The white toenail fungus or the white Onychomycosis is one of the most uncommon forms of nail fungal infection. The fungus that is responsible for the cause of white toenail fungus is called the Tinea mentagrophytes. The fungus mainly attacks the upper nail part of the toenail, the surface of the nail and ultimately the bed beneath the nail. Though the white fungus infection is less intense in form, the following are the characters related to this type of infection.

  • The nail will feature a flaky appearance with white patchy spots across the surface of the nail.
  • The nail becomes brittle and easily breakable.
  • The nail becomes extremely thickened and often the nail plate becomes so thick that it becomes difficult to trim or file.
  • The sides of the nail often get affected even though the nail plate remains more or less unaffected.
  • Sometimes the infection can spread to the skin along the side of the nails.

The risk of getting affected by the white nail fungus is more in case of aged people. The nail is mainly composed of a complex protein called keratin which gradually becomes scarce with the advancement of age. As a result the nail grows slow and becomes brittle in nature due to exposure to wear and tear for years.

White Toenail Fungus is easily curable. One of the most effective ways to treat white toenail fungus is by taking up home remedies. There are various types of therapeutic ways to treat toenail fungus. You can soak your infected nail in a basin of Listerine, vinegar or a solution of hydrogen peroxide. Zeta Clear is also another toenail therapeutic gel that is efficient enough to ward off the entire fungal growth. Unlike strong antifungal drugs, Zeta Clear is completely safe for consumption as it does not cause any side effects.
