Weight management of kids is known to be an important issue to discuss. In today’s fast food world, kids are known to be overweight, out of which 80% of them stay overweight when they grow old. This is the main risk factor for the youth which can lead to many medical problems like high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol or sleep apnea along with uncontrollable obesity. As kids are totally in control of their parents, weight management of kids can be considered as an important issue for parents only.
Weight Management of Kids
Children normally need important nutrients in their growing phase. If he/she consumes more food and calories than required, the excess calories get converted into fat which they have to lose by dieting or exercising. As kids are totally our responsibility, it is important to plan a good weight management of kids which will help them to stay healthy.
· The main principle of weight management in kids is to prevent them from being over-weight and keep normal growth in their height.
· You can achieve this by giving healthier food to your kid and begin a program of regular physical activity.
· Once the kid has stopped gaining weight by regular program of dieting and exercising, you can step forward to the goals of slow weight loss if necessary.
· Motivation to your kid is the main key of making the entire program successful. You can motivate your kid by getting the whole family actively involved in the healthier eating plan and exercising regularly.
· Limit viewing television for the kid. This is because viewing it for excessive time can lead to key problems and weight gain because of sitting for more time without losing any calories.
· Your kid must eat at least three well-balanced meals, plus two nutritious snacks.
· You can include low-calorie foods like raw fruits or vegetables during each snack.
· Encourage your kid to drink at least 4-6 glasses of water. Avoid them from drinking regular soft drinks or fruit juices.
· Try to maintain a weekly journal of food and beverage intake of your kid along with the time spent in watching TV. Record your kid's weight each week.
Some eating habits your kid should follow are as follows:
· Give more salad or vegetables in lunch
· Serve fresh fruits as dessert and try to keep your kid away from frequent eating of ice cream or cakes.
· While shopping, buy low-calorie and low fat meals and avoid buying snacks like chips, soft drinks or ice cream.
Tips to increase physical activities of your kid:
· Walk or ride cycle instead of driving for short distances
· Take a walk with your kid
· Motivate him/her to use stairs instead of escalators
· Encourage regular exercise for at least 20-30 minutes.
· Include jogging, swimming, rollerblading, riding a skateboard, bike riding etc.
· Motivate your kid to play sports like basketball, tennis, volleyball, soccer, etc.
In this way, you can easily plan weight management of kids to protect your children from complex health related situations.
