There can be many reasons for why people choose soy milk or cow milk. Apart from ethical reason and personal taste, we can focus on issues of soy milk vs. cow milk depending on the nutrition and health aspects. For this, you don’t have to be expert in making choices.

Conclusions Drawn from Soy Milk Vs Cow Milk

·         For fat, you get your desired amount as per the serve by picking the right product in both cow’s milk and soy milk.

·         Both have the same amount of calcium and protein

·         Cow’s milk is rich in saturated fats and cholesterol compared to soy milk

·         Soy milk contains some amount of Riboflavin and Vitamin B12, while cow’s milk contains zero amounts.

Health Issues to Consider

Soy naturally contains isoflavone which is good for health. It is believed that unless a baby shows signs of a dairy allergy, soy milk is not advised as an infant formula.

Nutrition and Vitamin Issues

  • Phosphorus: Soy milk contains about half the phosphorus compared to cow milk. Most Americans get too much phosphorus in their daily diets. Hence, the reduced phosphorus of soy milk is beneficial for most of the people.
  • Riboflavin: Soy milk contains around 60% less riboflavin compared to cow’s milk. It is an important vitamin, found in great abundance in seeds, green leafy vegetables, nutritional yeast, nuts, legumes, and whole grains. Therefore, cow’s milk is not the only necessary source of riboflavin for a person eating well balanced heath diet.
  • Vitamin A: The dairy industry states that cow’s milk is better than soy milk as it contains vitamin A. However, it is not found naturally in cow’s milk.
  • Fatty Acids: As soy milk is made from beans, it contains about 9 times less saturated fats compared to cow’s milk. Saturated fat is one of the leading contributors to heart disease. It has been also noticed that soy milk has 10 times more fatty acids, which is a healthier type of fat like cow’s milk.
  • Cholesterol: Soy milk is cholesterol free. On the other hand, a cup of cow’s milk has 34 mg of cholesterol. Cholesterol is another reason of leading causes of heart disease. Soy milk lowers bad cholesterol while cow’s milk raises LDL cholesterol. Additional heart protection is provided with phyto chemicals found in abundance in soy milk. Cow’s milk does not contain such chemicals.
  • Cancer: Research shows that men consuming soy milk every day are 70% less likely to get prostate cancer. However, no similar findings related to men who drink cow’s milk are made.
  • Protein and Calcium: Soy milk is rich in protein as does cow’s milk. Natural soy milk does not contain much calcium compared to cow’s milk. 100 grams of soy milk contains 4 mg of calcium. More soy milk products are being fortified with calcium.

The debate of soy milk vs. cow milk will surely continue for years. The main point is that both milks provide vitamins, nutrients, and minerals, but soy milk has been found improving the health of its drinkers.
