Pain in shoulder joint hampers easy movement of the body to a great extent. The shoulder joint is formed at the junction of the shoulder bone or the clavicle and the shoulder blade called scapula. It is also the joint from where the two arms are attached to the trunk part of the body. The shoulder joint pain may involve intense pain while lifting a heavy object, and may lead to inability to raise the arm completely. In some cases the joint pain is also accompanied by swollenness, redness, inflammation and sometimes even fever.

Shoulder joint pain can be caused due to several bones and muscle disorders. The following are some of the major causes behind shoulder joint aches.

  • Arthralgia – The disorder causes inflammation and chronic pain. The arthritis occurs within the bones as a result the shoulder loses the capacity to carry out basic functional movements.
  • Damage of cartilage - Though damage of cartilage is a more common cause for knee joint disorders, destruction of cartilage or formation of cartilage flakes along the bone surface of the shoulder joint can also lead to pain and swelling. This also causes immobility of the shoulder joint.
  • Shoulder pain can also be caused due to occurrence of infection, mechanical defects, joint effusions, tissue contractures, muscle spasms and such.
  • Shoulder joint dislocation is also another cause for inflicting pain and triggering immobility of the shoulder joints. This occurs when the ball gets loosened from the socket and the subluxation of the joint takes place due to the destruction of the joint adjoining ligaments and muscles.
  • Damage to the shoulder joint capsule is also another disorder that can cause immense pain. Joint effusion is a consequence to the damage of the joint capsule. The volume of the synovial fluid increases and gives a feeling of bogginess in the affected shoulder region.
  • The acromioclavicular is a type of arthritis occurring in the acromion and calvicular joint area. The incidence of the disease causes pain during the process of adduction or when the hand is brought in front of the shoulder. The pain may further aggravate when the shoulder is shrugged while traumatic pain directly affects the shoulder girdle as well.
