 Binge eating disorder is known to be a pattern of disordered eating or uncontrollable eating. The symptoms related to these are easily noticeable. During binges, a person consumes too much of food. Binge eating disorder is also known as compulsive overeating which is out of control and powerless to stop.

Important features of binge eating disorder are as follows:

  • Frequent episodes of binge eating which is uncontrollable
  • People with binge eating disorder have a guilty, disgusting and depressing feeling.
  • Feeling distressed during and after binging

 

 

The Binge Eating Disorder Cycle

 

Binge eating disorder takes place in cycle which can lead to the cycle of regret and self-loathing. It is normally followed by weight gain and obesity. It becomes a cycle where eating makes you feel better, then worse after eating and once again turning back to food.

Behavioral Symptoms

·         Rapidly eating excessive amounts of food

·         Eating even when the stomach is full

·         Inability to stop eating

·         Hiding food to eat

·         Gorging food when alone

·         Eating continuously

 

Effects of Binge Eating Disorder

 

Binge eating disorder can result in different types of physical as well as emotional and social troubles. Along with weight gain, here is a list of some of the important health issues that can result in a person with binge eating disorder.

Obesity

Obesity is the main outcome of this disorder which can lead to the following diseases:

·         Type 2 diabetes

·         Gallbladder disease

·         High cholesterol

·         High blood pressure

·         Certain types of cancer

·         Heart disease 

·         Osteoarthritis

·         Joint and muscle pain

·         Gastrointestinal problems

·         Sleep apnea

 

Binge Eating Disorder Causes

Causes of binge eating disorder depend on specific genes and emotions of a person. Biological abnormalities are the main factors which can result in binge eating. It can take place due to incorrect massaging of hunger and fulfillment to the hypothalamus of the brain. Social pressure and depression are the known causes of this disorder.

 

Treatment of Binge Eating Disorder

In order to stop or overcome this disorder, here are some important strategies that can help you to overcome this disorder:

·         Stress is the most important aspects of binge eating. Start exercising, plan relaxation strategies, meditation and breathing exercises to reduce it. 

·         Take 3 meals a day and 2 healthy snacks. Stick to this scheduled times. Keep in mind that skipping meals can also result in binge eating.

·         In some cases, strict dieting can trigger binge eating. So avoid dieting which can cause you to crave for food even more.

·         Regular exercise is a natural mood-booster which can help to control the emotional up and down by reducing binge eating.

·         Get enough sleep
