What is Hypoglycaemia?

Hypoglycaemia is a medical condition where in the amount of glucose or sugar required in the bloodstream falls below normal. Hypoglycaemia literally means low blood sugar.
Glucose is a very vital element which is required by the body for proper functioning. Glucose aids the brain to function in a proper manner, thus inadequate glucose can lead to brain impairment. Inadequate glucose supplied to the brain causes one to feel uneasy, deranged and bad. Coma and death are also possibilities when hypoglycaemia is not treated on time.
Symptoms of Hypoglycaemia are-
- The symptoms as well the manifestations which point towards a hypoglycaemia attack can vary and be completely different in individuals. The usual attacks of hypoglycaemia can show signs of excessive sweating even in cold weather conditions, dilated pupils of the eye, clamminess and coldness, tremor, anxiety onset, shakiness, nervousness and palpitating heart beats.
- When a patient suffers from severe attacks of Hypoglycaemia one can undergo severe feelings of hunger, vomiting, nausea and abdominal discomforts.
- Hypoglycaemia has shown to affect the functions of the brain which causes: changes in normal and usual personality, impaired judgement, fear of death, mood swings, depression, crying for no valid reasons, often day dreaming, fatigue, constant sleepiness, automatic behaviour, seizures and coma, impaired speech, stuttering, delirium and amnesia.
Hypoglycaemia can be treated and prevented in the following manner-
- The glucose content or the blood sugar levels in the bloodstream is increased and brought to normal.
- It is advised that the intake of carbohydrates be increased. Carbohydrates can be taken in the form of liquids and solid food items which are easy to swallow and digest.
- One can prevent the onset of hypoglycaemia by avoiding the decline of glucose levels in the blood. It is advisable that one does not skip meals or reduce the daily recommended amount of carbohydrates which are essential for the bodily functions.
- One should always make sure that the body gets proper nutrition at all times. Poor nutrition can lead to severe behavioural as well as psychological problems.
- It has been shown that hypoglycaemia is commonly found in individuals suffering from food allergies. It is advised that one avoids the allergen as much as possible to avoid the occurrence of hypoglycaemia.
- One should take measures to eat healthy and well balanced meals throughout the day without binging on addictive food items.
- Blood sugar levels in the body can also drop when an individual consumes food items which are allergic in nature. To avoid hypoglycaemia one should also try and avoid stress since hormonal stress can also lead to the fall in blood sugar levels.
It should be noted that hypoglycaemia can be caused due to various factors. As the symptoms of hypoglycaemia are manifested in the body one should take steps to improve ones health along with taking steps to raise the levels of blood sugar levels to normal.
