A stomach ulcer is defined as a burning sensation in the stomach. Sometimes the burning sensation can be so severe that an ulcer is often mistaken for heart burn. The symptoms in regard to stomach ulcers can last from a few hours to several hours. A stomach ulcer can erupt at anytime. Stomach ulcers are usually caused due to stress and can also be passed from person to person through contaminated food items and saliva.

The pain which accompanies stomach ulcers usually resembles a hunger pang. Stomach ulcer pains can be relieved by taking antacids and eating food. Stomach ulcers are also referred to as peptic ulcers. An empty stomach should be avoided when a stomach ulcer erupts.

Types of stomach ulcers-

Gastric ulcer: The gastric ulcer is formed in the stomach

Duodenal ulcer: The duodenal ulcer is formed beyond the stomach and the first foot of the small intestine.

Treatment and remedies for stomach ulcers-

Change in diet: The best and the most natural way to treat stomach ulcers, is to bring a change in ones diet and eating habits. Some food items are known to irritate stomach ulcers. Food items which irritate stomach ulcers are: fatty foods, acidic foods, fried food and spicy food items.

Milk: Though milk is often suggested for the treatment of stomach ulcers, it should be taken in small quantities. Milk contains proteins which can cause more gastric acids to form.

Ensure your diet is rich in fibre: Stomach ulcers can be treated when you include soluble fibre in your diet. Cabbage is a rich source of soluble fibre which can heal stomach ulcers as it contains glutamine. Glutamine is useful in the treatment of ulcers and is a good source of fibre.

Some other remedies for stomach ulcers are-

  • One should refrain from ibuprofen, coffee, tea and aspirin.
  • Alcohol and cigarettes should be avoided when you suffer from stomach ulcers. Both alcohol and smoking are known to irritate ulcers and worsen the condition.
  • Try and bring about lifestyle changes. One should indulge in yoga, de-stressing and meditating programs. Meditation and yoga are most helpful if ulcers are caused due to stress and tension.

If you have severe pain in your stomach, the pain could also be due to some other reason which you do not know about. You must visit your doctor to get your stomach pain tested. Your doctor would be the most suited person to inform you if you have a stomach ulcer or if you have some other illness.

When on the treatment for stomach ulcers you may also be tested for helicobacter pylori bacterium. If tested for helicobacter pylori bacterium, your health care provider may suggest a regimen of antibiotics which would be helpful to kill the bacteria and also treat the stomach ulcer for good.

One should remember that though stomach ulcers may be quite common, ulcers should not be taken lightly. When stomach ulcers are not treated on time or when one ignores diet change it can lead to fatal complications.
