Treatment of Mouth Ulcers

A mouth ulcer is defined as erosion which takes place inside the mouth. Mouth ulcers can also be loss of a part of a tissue in the mucous membrane of the mouth. Ulcers in the mouth are usually red with a white coating inside the mouth. Sores can appear anywhere in the mouth such as the inside area of the lips, under the tongue, inside the cheeks and on the gums.

An ulcer in the mouth usually begins with a burning sensation at specific spot in the mouth. These ulcers are known to be quite common. Mouth ulcers are painful, embarrassing and annoying. One can see ulcers in the form of red breaks in the mouth lining. Pain is caused by the nerves being exposed which are below the surface lining in the mouth.

Causes of mouth ulcers-

Mouth ulcers can be formed due to various reasons. Some reasons which cause ulcers are allergy to certain food items and bacteria. Malfunction in the immune system can lead to mouth ulcers. Deficiency in vitamins such as iron, folic acid and vitamin B12 can also cause mouth ulcers.

Some more causes for mouth ulcers are-

  • Hereditary factors
  • Constant stress
  • Wrong or faulty diet
  • Anaemia
  • Digestive problems such as constipation
  • Irritation caused by chemicals
  • Alcohol and tobacco
  • Infection of the herpes simplex virus
  • Hormonal imbalances, mainly during puberty in girls

Treatment for mouth ulcers-

  • The treatment for ulcers is only possible and best suited if one knows the exact cause of the ulcers. One should ensure oral hygiene and avoid hot and spicy food items.
  • Grind leaves of the Indian plum also known as jambula. Remove the pasts in water and gargle with the same water. Gargling with this water is known to give instant relief.
  • One can get immediate relief from ulcers while gargling with the water of adulsa or justicia adhadota.
  • Take a ripe banana and mix the banana with curds. This preparation should be eaten as a dessert.
  • Include more greens in your diet. Greens which are rich in fibre content also prevent the onset of constipation.
  • Papaya and a decoction of the bark of the banyan tree reduce the pain in the mouth and also reduce ulcers.
  • Rinse your mouth with warm salt water and antiseptic mouthwash. Salt water helps in reducing the pain caused due to mouth ulcers.
  • Bonjela which is an over the counter topical gel also reduces the inflammation caused due to ulcers. Bonjela contains choline salicylate which is a local analgesic.
  • Some items such as fenugreek, turmeric, henna, and the Indian gooseberry are known to reduce mouth ulcers and the pain caused due to ulcers. Fenugreek can be used while gargling and henna is helpful since it is known for its cooling properties.

It should be noted that mouth ulcers are not contagious nor are ulcers infectious. Mouth ulcers can be easily treated and avoided. One can prevent mouth ulcers from taking shape by resolving stress related issues.
