E. coli is basically a bacterium Escherichia coli which is a main cause of food borne illness. It is shown that over 72,000 people suffer from E. coli infection each year. Treatment of E coli infection depends upon what symptoms it is showing.

E coli infection symptoms consist of cramping and diarrhea, severe stomach pain, blood in the fecal matter, etc. If in case one is not treated, this infection can be deadly.

Here are some important points that are to be considering during the treatment of E coli infection.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, it is studied that most patients recover without antibiotics or other type of treatment within 5 to 10 days. It is also known that antibiotics do not improve the course of the disease.

Urinary tract infections due to E coli can be treated with the help of your physician. Scientists say that 22 percent of urinary-tract infections are resistant to a drug trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX), which is the result of excessive use of antibiotics.

Phage Therapy

·         Presently Phage therapy centers are commonly known for providing treatment of E coli.

·         These therapy centers are primarily available in Republic of Georgia and Poland.

·         Now United States FDA gave approval to apply it on  E. coli O157:H7

Vaccination

·         Researchers are working to develop safe and effective vaccines to minimize the worldwide infection of E. coli.

·         In 2006, Fort Dodge Animal Health (Wyeth) introduced live attenuated vaccine. This vaccine is a genetically modified virulent vaccine that has been successfully demonstrated to protect against O78 and untypeable E coli strains.

In this way, we can say that although today there are specific antibiotics available in market, it may be possible that E coli strains may get resistance against these antibiotics. As a result, continuous research is going on, so as to form effective antibiotics for the treatment of E coli infection.
