Bedwetting is known to be a common childhood problem. Every child easily learns how to control urination in daytime because it is easy for them to get aware of bladder filling in day time. Nighttime bladder control usually takes more time to learn i.e. around age of 4. Treatment for bed wetting in children of this age will help your child to get control on bladder filling at night time.
Basically, the number of children having bedwetting problem varies by age. In many children bedwetting resolves automatically on its own without any treatment.
It is very natural that children get embarrassed by their bed-wetting condition and try to get away from social activates. So parents can help their children to reduce these negative feelings regarding bed-wetting by treating your child with proper suggestion of doctor.
Treatment for Bed Wetting in Children
We all knew that as children mature, their muscles become stronger with increase in their bladder capacity. Sleep becomes less deep; so that that can easily recognize sensitive messages that bladder sends to the brain.
While we are focusing in treatment, keep in mind that there are two types of treatment: which are medical and behavioral treatments to minimize bed wetting problems.
The Medical Treatment
This treatment consists of using medicines to get rid of this problem. The medicines are listed as below:
- Imipramine (Tofranil): This drug is known to be a tricyclic antidepressant. It improves the child's sleeping pattern and functioning of the smooth muscles present in the bladder.
- Desmopressin Acetate: This drug is basically a synthetic form of the antidiuretic hormone and is a nasal spray. It helps the child's body to make less urine and thus, minimizes the risk of overflowing of the child's bladder during sleep. The medication often works quickly as compared to Imipramine.
Behavioral Treatment
This type of treatment is proved to be more effective and also safer than medical treatment. But only thing is that behavioral treatment takes somewhat longer time to show results, but the improvement usually continues for the rest of the life of the child. Here are some important methods that may be helpful as a behavioral treatment:
- Retention Control Training: In this training, the child learns to control urinating during the day also by postponing it. This exercise helps to extend the capacity of the bladder as well as to strengthen the muscle which holds back urination.
- Night-Lifting: This procedure involves walking your child to the bathroom to urinate at night. By teaching your child to awaken and to clear bladder many times during the night will give positive result.
- Moisture Alarm: This alarm is a clip-on sensor probe attached to the outside of bed-clothing. An alarm beins to ring when the child starts to wet the bed at night. As a result the alarm wakes the child and child remembers to go to the bathroom to finish and then go back to sleep.
- Hypnosis: It is found to be a very effective treatment for bedwetting. By repeated listening to a hypnosis tape, the brain gets re-programmed and able to respond to a full bladder while asleep.
All these treatments for bed wetting in children are very useful and satisfying. Do consult your doctor, so as to fix the specific treatment for your child.
