Hernia is categorised as a muscle tissue problem. Hernia is quite a common illness which affects both men and women alike. An individual can encounter hernia at anytime and at any age.

Hernia mainly occurs when the muscular tissue around one of the organs becomes weak and begins to tear. When the organ becomes weak, they begin to protrude through the tear. Hernias cause a bulge to appear and have the tendency to get bigger with time.

Some symptoms of hernias are-

Bulges occur under the skin. Problems begin to occur with prolonged standing, sitting and pain while lifting. You can tell if your hernia condition gets worse, if you develop severe constant pain, vomiting and nausea.

Hernia is classified into categories which are-

  • Inguinal hernia
  • Umbilical hernia
  • Incisional hernia
  • Hiatus hernia
  • Abdominal hernia

Treating hernias-

Hernias can be treated in various ways. Hernias can be treated effectively through medication as well as surgery. The type of hernia you suffer from will determine the treatment required.

Treatment for inguinal hernia: Inguinal hernias are treated using the Lichtenstein repair. This treatment is not considered difficult as it can be carried by non-specialist surgeons too. Using the Lichtenstein repair one experiences less pain and quick recovery.

Treatment for hiatus hernia: Medical treatment is preferred for hiatus hernia. One should avoid lying down after meals; avoid alcohol, tobacco, acidic and spicy food items. One should include a diet rich in fibre and small frequent meals.

Treatment for abdominal hernia: An abdominal hernia tends to increase in size. One should avoid activities which are strenuous and vigorous in nature such as heavy lifting. Sufferers from abdominal hernia are recommended to wear a truss which is type of belt which is used to keep the hernia from projection.

Hernia surgery-

Hernia surgery is usually conducted on an outpatient basis. The surgery takes around 30 minutes for children and around 60 minutes for adults. A general or a local anaesthesia is required for the surgery. Complications in regard to hernia surgeries are known to be quite rare. Even if complications occur they can be easily treated. The patient can go back home the next day after surgery along with some pain reliving medicines.

Hernia surgeries are conducted with help of laparoscopically. Laparoscope is an instrument which is mainly used for hernia operations. With the use of a laparoscope a surgeon need not make a big incision in the skin. The laparoscope has a very tiny camera and with a small incision it gets inside the body.

For the treatment of hernia day surgery is always recommended in most cases. It is recommended to be present in the clinic to answer and ask questions in regard to the treatment of hernias.

When you meet your doctor it would be vital to give your doctor detailed explanations about your problem. It would be also advisable to ask your doctor about preoperative and postoperative care required. When you notice the symptoms of hernia, it would be advisable to consult your doctor, since untreated hernias can lead to severe complications.
