Acid reflux is basically a gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) condition. In this condition, the food or liquid in the stomach leaks backwards into the esophagus which is attached to the mouth to the stomach. This action irritates the esophagus, causing heartburn and other related symptoms. There are many remedies for acid reflux. These are listed as below.

Commonly used remedies in the treatment of acid reflux include:

  1. Acid suppressants, e.g. histamine2-receptor antagonists. Histamine is a name of chemical that get released in the body under different conditions, especially during inflammation. During acid reflux condition, it can release more acid in the stomach, so blocking it reduces acid production.
  2. Proton pump inhibitors are the type of medicines that reduce the production of acid in the stomach by directly attacking on the acid producing cells on the stomach wall.
  3. Prokinetic agents, these medicines promote emptying of the stomach. It helps to increase the pressure of the lower esophageal sphincter.
  4. Antacids are over-the-counter remedies that are usually used to treat mild acid-reflux symptoms.

Natural Remedies for Acid Reflux

Acid reflux can also be naturally treated using home remedies. Natural treatment focuses on lifestyle changes, quitting smoking and limited alcohol consumption.

Treating GERD with Surgery

In some patients, an acid reflux cure may be possible only through GERD surgery. This surgery is a persistent process of GERD treatment which usually starts with an acid reflux diet, followed by acid reflux medication.

To prevent acid reflux, avoid the following foods and beverages as a preventive measure. This may result into reduced acid reflux symptoms.

·         Alcohol

·         Caffeine

·         Carbonated beverages

·         Chocolate

·         Citrus fruits and juices

·         Tomatoes

·         Tomato sauces

·         Spicy or fatty foods

·         Full-fat dairy products

·         Peppermint

·         Spearmint

In this way, we can say that acid reflux condition is a very individual disease. A food that triggers acid reflux in one patient may not aggravate acid reflux in another. So always try to monitor which foods are safe to eat and which will trigger your esophageal reflux.
