Viral infections cause common cold and these types of infections generally increase the production of mucus. Blowing your nose rapidly expels mucus from the chest and nasal passageway. In turn, your body loses fluids. Drink water and juices to replace lost fluids. This would flush toxins from your body and keep your body hydrated. Orange juice encourages the eviction of mucus which could reduce chest congestion. Drinking hot teas or other hot liquids could calm a scratchy throat and ease a chronic cough.

While it’s not always possible to remain in bed when battling a cough and cold, lessening your activity and getting plenty of rest could speed your recovery. Moving around and engaging in activities such as sports and exercise could exaggerate a cough and worsen a cold. Resting improves your immune system which enables you to battle viral infection and feel better. Try to sleep for at least eight hours at night and if you are dealing with a bad cold or chronic cough stay away from work or school and spend one or two days at home to regain your strength.

Along with fluids and rest, take vitamin C supplements which are a proven to be immune system booster. Vitamin C supplements are accessible in capsule or liquid form. According to doctors, you need to take up to six grams of vitamin C a day to improve your symptoms of cold. Other supplements to relieve a cough and cold include zinc and Echinacea.
