First Aid Tips for Nausea

  • Slow, Deep Breaths : There are a few studies which indicate that deep, slow breathing during nausea really helps the patients to feel better. The person with nausea can breathe in through the nose, and out through the mouth to feel easy.
  • Vitamin B6 or Ginger Supplements:  Ginger is known to be a good anti-nausea agent. Vitamin B6 also has had some success as an anti nausea agent. So you can use 1 gm of ginger or 10 mg of vitamin B6to feel better.
  • Over-the-Counter Anti-Nausea Medications  :  Antihistamines which are used for allergies can also provide a purpose of good anti-nausea medications.
  • See the Doctor:  If none of the above first aids work properly, your physician may be able to help. Pregnant women should always take advice of their doctors to decide which treatments are effective and safe for the mother and baby.
  • Another type of first aid home treatment for nausea is to drink fluids. Fluid intake corrects electrolyte imbalance of the body, which may stop vomiting. And it is also important to prevent yourself from becoming dehydrated due to fluid loss.

Important Aspects of Fluid Intake during Nausea

·         Always use clear liquids, e.g. clear soup, juice, lemon-lime soda, etc.

·         Avoid milk and any dairy products during nausea condition. It can make nausea and vomiting worse.

·         Start taking soft foods, oatmeal, gelatin, yogurt, if your condition is better. However, if nausea and vomiting returns, it would be better to go back to liquid intake.

·         Give oral rehydration solutions such as Pedialyte, Resol, Rehydrate, and Rice-Lyte to your child during nausea.

·         Cola, fruit juice, tea, sports drinks and plain water will not be able to replace fluid or electrolytes lost from vomiting. So avoid these fluids during nausea.

·         According to the research of World Health Organization, the recipe for fluid rehydration is 2 tablespoons of sugar or honey along with ¼ teaspoon of table salt and ¼ teaspoon of baking soda. Mix this with 1 liter of boiled water.

Keep in mind that short-term nausea or vomiting is usually harmless, but may sometimes point out a more serious condition. Prolonged vomiting may lead to dangerous electrolyte imbalances. In that case, do contact your doctor as soon as possible.
