Dysuria is defined as burning, pain, difficulty or discomfort connected to urination. Dysuria mostly occurs more frequently in women than men. It’s a common problem, but its significance shouldn’t be minimized as it could be a sign of a serious problem. Dysuria and its treatment need to be addressed quickly as roughly 25% of women complain of acute dysuria each year.

Causes of Dysuria

Dysuria might occur due to several causes such as:

1.       Bacteria

2.       Escherichia coli is the most common organism that could cause dysuria

3.       Prostatitis, urethritis, pyelonephritis, interstitial cystisis, cervidtis, vulvitis, contact dermatitis and urinary retention.

4.       Infection of urinary tract, diabetes mellitus, bladder infection and radiation cystitis.

Another several non infectious problems might also cause dysuria such as: postmenopausal women could suffer from dysfunction of the lower urinary tract due to a reduction in estrogen; atrophy. If you have cancer of the bladder or renal calculi and renal tract, then it might present with dysuria as one of the symptoms. Another cause such as urethral disturbance could occur during sexual intercourse. If you are taking medications like those used for chemotherapy, then it could also inflame the bladder.

Symptoms of Dysuria

Dysuria has several symptoms such as:

1.       Hematuria, or blood in the urine

2.       Urinary frequency, hesitation and slowness

3.       Vaginal discharge, dyspareunia or pain during sexual intercourse

4.       Abnormal vaginal bleeding, urinary urgency and urethral discharge

Vaginal infection might be alleged if the pain occurs as urine passes over the labia. Pain inside the body suggests cystitis or urethritis. If the pain occurs at the beginning of urination, then it’s generally caused by inflammation of the urethra. But if it occurs after urination, then bladder infection might be the caused. Other signs and symptoms that might accompany dysuria also help to determine the underlying cause.

Acute pyelonephritis is manifested by systemic symptoms such as fever, chills, fatigue, back pain, nausea and vomiting.

Dysuria and its Treatment

If you are suffering from this disease, then you must use possible treatments such as:

1.       Dysuria treatment must focus on treating the underlying cause

2.       You could treat infections with the antibiotics for the aberrant organism Urinary analgesics such as phenazopyridine might ease acute pain that are linked with UTI and could be used before a culture is done and antibiotic therapy begins.

3.       You need to avoid wearing tight clothes as a part of treatment for this disease.

4.       Finally, you must also avoid feminine douching

Prevention Tips of Dysuria

The best ways to prevent dysuria are by avoiding tight clothes such as under garment, managing self care strategies, avoiding intercourse for some time, drinking 12 to 15 glasses of water each day, and keeping the genital area clean and dry with mild soap and water. Don’t use vaginal sprays and irritation soaps and avoid sexual contact with an infected person.

Side effects of dysuria and its treatment depend on the treatment used. There are generally no side effects to ice packs or heat as long as they are not applied to the skin for long periods of time. Treatments that require surgery pose a risk of infection, bleeding and allergic reaction to anesthesia.
