Cataract laser surgery is a technique for the removal of the natural lens of the eye which develops an opacification called cataract. With increasing time some metabolic changes take place in crystalline lens fibers. This leads to formation of cataract and loss of transparency, causing impairment or loss of vision.
Cataract Laser Surgery
Cataract laser surgery is one of the best ways of removing cataracts. It is still experimentally tested. It uses light as an alternative of ultrasound in dissolving cataract. Cataract laser surgery takes place using 2 techniques:
LASEK: Laser Epithelial Keratomileusis
LASIK: Laser in Situ Keratomileusis
LASEK
- In case of laser epithelial keratomileusis surgery, the cornea's surface layer is treated with alcohol and peeled back, so as to reshape the layer underneath.
- The process successfully helps to avoid complications associated with cataract.
LASIK
- In laser situ keratomileusis surgery, the surface cover of cornea is scoured away. It is followed by reshaping of the underlying cornea surface.
- LASIK took place in the mid-nineties
- LASIK prevents problems like slow rehabilitation, postoperative pain, and corneal haze which are seen in the traditional surgery.
Important Aspects of Cataract Laser Surgery
- This has become the most popular eye surgery over the past ten years
- Many patients take the benefit of this surgery
- This cataract laser surgery takes a few minutes with the help of gentle computer.
- Both LASEK and LASIK surgeries are effective, predictable and safe
- Cataract laser surgery does not take place in the doctor's clinic as it still needs some surgical incision.
- It takes some weeks to completely heal an eye which has undergone laser surgery.
- Cataract laser surgery treatment helps to improve everyday activities, self confidence, work and safety of the patient.
- One surveys tells that there is 92–98 percent satisfaction in laser surgery
- It is been said that laser cataract surgery will replace all the traditional surgery process.
Although there are many benefits of laser surgery for cataract, here are some important points that will tell you about the more frequently reported complications in patients using this technique.
- Surgery followed by dry eyes
- Overcorrection or undercorrection
- Vitamin D deficiency
- Visual acuity fluctuation
- Halos around light sources
- Light sensitivity
- Double vision
- Wrinkles in flap
- Decentered ablation
- Debris under flap
- Posterior vitreous detachment
- Macular hole
- Thin flap
- Induced astigmatism
- Corneal Ectasia
- Floaters
- Epithelium erosion
Factors Affecting Cataract Laser Surgery
· Cornea of the eye is basically avascular, so as to be transparent and function normally. Cells of the cornea absorb oxygen from the tear film.
· As a result, low-oxygen-permeable contact lenses can reduce the cornea's oxygen absorption and can form corneal neovascularization which is known as growth of blood vessels into the cornea.
· This can cause slight inflammation during the healing time
From this we can say that cataract laser surgery in an upcoming treatment procedure for cataract which helps in fast recovery of the patient.
