Vision loss in old age can be due to molecular degeneration. Can molecular degeneration be treated or not? Let us find the answer. Patients normally develop age-related macular degeneration. Treatment for Dry Macular Degeneration
Dry macular degeneration cannot be cured, but this condition should remain under an ophthalmologist's care to monitor the patient’s eyes.
Treatment for Wet Macular Degeneration
· Different types of treatments are available to treat wet AMD
· All these treatments may not give normal vision, but can improve eye sight
· Medications are normally used to prevent the growth of leaky blood vessels in the patient’s eye. Lucentis and Macugen medicine is approved by FDA which is commonly used in treating wet macular degeneration. These medicines are injected into the eye for four to six weeks.
· Laser photocoagulation when used as a treatment, cures macular degeneration by destroying leaking blood vessels. Laser therapy is helpful for nearly 20% of wet macular degeneration. Sometimes, vision loss may occur because of scar tissue produced during treatment.
· Photodynamic therapy (PDT) uses a non-heat generating laser to treat blood vessels. Visudyne is injected into the patient's arm. Upon exposure to the laser; a chemical reaction takes place which seals off the leaky vessels.
Can we Prevent Macular Degeneration?
No, we cannot prevent AMD. Sometimes, smoking is known to be the number one risk factor in developing molecular degeneration. AMD can be controlled with the help of an ophthalmologist.
Can Macular Degeneration be treated?
Yes, it can be treated by medicine and by taking self care at home. Following are the important points to take care of molecular degeneration and stop it from becoming worse.

- Keep in mind that no one has yet found a treatment for the total cure of macular degeneration. Sometimes, antioxidant deficiencies have been noted as a cause of macular degeneration.
- Along with this, as discussed earlier laser treatment may lessen the vision loss. Argon and krypton lasers are used for treating this macular degeneration.
- There are different types of drugs available in the market which can block vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and used as a treatment option for macular degeneration.
- These treatments are known to be shown actual improvements in vision, rather than only delaying the loss of vision which is the characteristic of macular degeneration.
So from this we can say that there are no such medicines or technique that will cure muscular degeneration. So it is very important to visit your ophthalmologist regularly, so as to avoid the effects of muscular degeneration.
