Arthroscopy is the procedure for joint problems. It consists of surgical treatment to treat painful joints in our body. For examining the pain and for the treatment also, arthroscope is used.  Doctors find out the damage in the interior of a joint, using this device. Arthroscope is a type of endoscope. The treatment can also be done by using arthroscope. This small device in inserted into the joint through a small opening. This procedure is used to detect the cause of a pain or to treat the pain. Such kind of treatment is used for torn floating cartilage, torn surface cartilage, ACL reconstruction, and trimming damaged cartilage.

This technique was first used in 1919 in Japan. The procedures were quite different at that time. Over the past decades, many innovations had been made to the technique and ways of performing it. Arthroscopy is widely used in recent years as it is a very efficient way to treat the joints and also you don’t need to operate your joints fully. For this treatment, you don’t need to open your joints; just two small openings near the problem area can serve the purpose. The two incisions should be made: one for the arthroscope and one for surgical instruments. As this procedure doesn’t require any surgery on your body, the recovery time is also very short. Also, the success rate is greater than other surgical treatments.

This treatment is really helpful for athletes, who tend to get injured frequently. Also, for the senior citizens, as tissue recovery is a major problem among them. Fast recovery is the main advantage which is applicable for both of them. This treatment is less scarring because of smaller incisions. Nowadays, it is possible to perform arthroscopic examination of almost every joint of our body. The joints that are commonly treated using arthroscopy are knee, shoulder, elbow, wrist, ankle, foot, and hip. Here, let us take a look at the ways to perform arthroscopy for these different body parts:

  • Knee Arthroscopy: Knee arthroscopy is a widely used treatment nowadays to cure meniscus injury, reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament and for cartilage micro-fracturing. Knee arthroscopy is commonly used for diagnosing and treating the knee pain.
  • During the procedure, a small fiberoptic camera or the arthroscope is inserted into the joint through small opening of about 4mm. To visualize the joint parts, a special fluid is used. There might be a need of more incisions to check other parts of the knee. Through the other holes, small instruments are inserted to perform the surgery.
  • Shoulder Arthroscopy: This surgery is performed to cure shoulder disorders like subacromial impingement, acromioclavicular osteoarthritis, rotator cuff tears, frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis), chronic tendonitis and partial tears of the long biceps tendon, SLAP lesions and shoulder instability. The procedure is the same as for any other arthroscopy, but extra care should be taken while making small holes in the shoulder. Shoulder is a combination of some complex muscle structure, so while making holes it is important that you are not tearing any muscles around it.
  • Elbow Arthroscopy: Elbow joint pains can be cured using this treatment
  • Wrist Arthroscopy: It is used to diagnose and treat strain injury. Also, we can treat fractures of the wrist and torn ligaments.
  • Hip Arthroscopy: Hip arthroscopy is widely used to remove hip pain and also for the treatment of hip joint. The most common indication currently is for the treatment of femoroaceb tabular impingement (FAI).
  • Similarly, arthroscopy is efficiently used for joint pain in the spine, ankle and foot.

Arthroscopy is the most useful and fastest way to tackle joint pain. You don’t need to undergo a painful surgery and long recovery weeks for this. It is fast, efficient and relieves you from pain without spending much money.
