Diabetes is a disease of rise in the glucose level in the blood which directly affects the supply and conversion of calories into energy in the body. The quality and quantity of food intake is an important factor in preventing and keeping diabetes under check. Food consumption should be prescribed or be under a dietician. Sometimes, food rich in fat is misinterpreted as food with high carbohydrate content which is harmful to a diabetic. Care should be taken in order to stay fit and healthy with the disease of diabetes.Right intake of food helps in balancing an ideal weight which is a major cause for increase in the rate of diabetes. Eating habits should be carefully maintained.
The Glycaemic Index:Follow the Glycaemic index which is the response of different types of carbohydrates to the level in sugar. Food containing same amount of carbohydrate or fat may reciprocate in a different form to a diabetic. One type of food may not affect the level of sugar on the other hand another food type may raise glucose level to affect heart and brain. This is known as glycaemic index which differs from food type to food type. Food with lower glycaemic index is advised to the patients of diabetes. Food usually containing “slow sugars” is preferred for the intake rather then one’s which supply direct fat and glucose in the blood. The list of food with low glycaemic index is given below:
- Soya beans and groundnuts contain 10 to 19% sugar.
- Kidney pulses, lentils and fructose supply 20 to 29% of sugar.
- Black eyed beans, chick peas, apple, skimmed milk, tomato, yoghurt come under the category of 30 to 39%
- Bread, wheat, brown unhusked rice, shredded wheat, beetroot, banana, sprouted green gram and sucrose have 60 to 69% glycaemic index.
- Glucose increases sugar level by 100%.
Main nutrients:
Carbohydrates: Food containing carbohydrates should be unrefined, natural and slow in digestion. Examples are: whole grains; millets and oats.
Fats: Fats come from two sources: visible and invisible. Fats from visible sources are oil and butter which should be avoided to check your sugar level. Invisible sources of fats like milk, pulses, cereals and eggs should be consumed in less quantity.
Consumption of fruits: Fruits and vegetables are low calorie food diet which is not usually harmful in increasing the level of glucose in blood. Intake of green vegetables like cabbage leaves, lettuce, coriander leaves, mint, bitter gourd, brinjal and fenugreek leaves.
- The British Diabetic Association has declared that intake of juicy fruits is not harmful in the case of diabetes. However, fruits containing the percentage of fructose or sucrose should be preferred.
Fibre content: The American Diabetes Association in1979 corrected its decision in recommending fibrous food rather then foods containing high carbohydrate content. The British Medical Journal stated that “A high fibre diet induced a remission of diabetes in 85% of the patients tested”. The consumption of soluble fibers is preferable to insoluble fibers.
Right diet and exercise chart is a prerequisite in the treatment of diabetes. It is a disease with which regular intake of medicine under a certified doctor and diet plan should be maintained visibly. You can also seek the help of books that contain the amount and percentage of calorie intake recommended for diabetics.
