Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes mellitus which develops during pregnancy in women due to the increase in glucose, which is not absorbed by the cells because of lack in the production of insulin or inefficiency of body cells to employ insulin for conversion of glucose to energy. The American Diabetes Association confirms that pregnant women who are above
- twenty years of age,
- have a history of diabetes in their family,
- who are obese, should be diagnosed in between their 24 to 28 week of pregnancy.
Consequences of untreated diabetes: If diabetes is not cured during pregnancy, than the chances of health problems to the baby are highest. Children born under the spell of diabetes which enters the child’s body through placenta, can obstruct the normal growth of fetus.
- The child may suffer from breathing problems after the birth,
- The baby is prone to gain excessive weight or get obesity; this state is known as Microsomatia or fat baby syndrome.
- Baby can be born with damaged or bent shoulders due to excessive weight.
Diagnosis of Gestational Diabetes: The recommended doctor or heath center may take up following tests to diagnose the positive symptoms of this type of diabetes:
- Fasting blood glucose or random blood glucose test: This test is suggested after 8 hours of fasting with the intake of water at regular time intervals. Or, your doctor may check at any time, irrespective of any other factor. This is known as random blood glucose test.
- Screening glucose challenge test: For this test, you may be asked by your doctor to drink sugary beverage and get your glucose level checked after an hour. If the result is above then normal then further tests are recommended.
- Oral glucose tolerance test: You will be asked to eat normally before three days of this test and fast for 8 hours just before the test, Your glucose level will be checked, then you will be asked to drink a sugary beverage which will be followed with a glucose test after 1, 2 and 3 hours. If your glucose level is higher then normal, you will be recommended to follow anti-diabetic instructions.
Above normal glucose level:
- After one hour: 180 0r higher
- After two hours: 155 or higher
- After three hours: 140 or higher.

- Diet control and intake of healthy food: Women should avoid sweets, high content of carbohydrates and starch, include fiber food and vegetables in their diet chart.
