Diabetes is a chronic disorder affecting the metabolic rate and body order resulting in accumulation of the rise of sugar level in blood and urine. This disease is an incurable form of disorder which can merely be controlled with effective medication and control in dietary intake of food. Diabetes is a non-infected, non-viral triggered disease which is a hormone caused malformation of body. The hormonal changes result in the development of two types of diabetes at a primary level:
Diabetes Insipidus: It is a type of disorder which is rarely found among the number of diabetics worldwide. It results from the deficiency of insulin hormone secreted by pancreatic gland found in the backside of abdomen. The only cure available is the replacement of damaged hormone.
Diabetes Mellitus: It is a commonly found disease in 90% of population which results in the raised sugar level in blood and body. Often the term diabetes is associated with this form of disorder. This disease is curable by numerous methods ranging from effective medication and guide books to herbal medication.
The history of diabetes mellitus: The term was founded by an English physician Thomas Willis in the year 1675. This disease was first discovered 3500 years ago by the Egyptian. However Indian, Chinese, Greek and roman have reference to this type of disease in their medical texts. The Egyptian medical journal mentions the disease in the form of polyuria. The Greeks were aware of its association with polyuria and excess flow of urine. The Indians called it madhumela, meaning “rain of honey”. In whichever form the disease was manifested, it was a known form of disorder during ancient times.
The hormonal cause of diabetes mellitus: The rise in sugar is characterized by the improper functioning of insulin hormone- which is responsible for the breakdown of complex sugar molecules into glucose, which is readily absorbed by blood. This glucose is transported to million body cells and converted into energy. The secretion of insulin takes place with the aid of Beta cells found in the tail section of 15 cm long fish shaped endocrine gland.
Types of diabetes mellitus:
Type 1, insulin dependent diabetes mellitus: This type of disorder is directly affected by the amount of insulin hormone secreted. It usually develops from pancreatic gland which produces little or no insulin. This is also referred as juvenile diabetes as people are susceptible to this disease till the age of 20. The beta cells are attacked by the person’s immune system.
Type-2, Non insulin dependent diabetes: This is an adult form of disease. It is developed when body cells of the patient become resistant to the intake of insulin hormone which leads to the malfunction in the breakdown and conversion of sugar particles.
What is diabetes is a question which should be answered from the economic perspective of American government. The yearly cost of the disease was recorded as 98 billion dollars in 1997 which increased by 10% in the successive years. The American health department stated that 17 million people suffered from diabetes mellitus. Increase in the number of deaths caused by diabetes has made it a global issue for which research and theory work is being conducted by various medical scientist and writers.
