Monitoring glucose level in diabetes is very important, so as to avoid life threatening situations. We all know that diabetes is a disease in which the patient’s body is unable to make enough of the insulin or can’t use insulin in a proper manner. Monitoring glucose level is important in type 1 as well as type 2 diabetes.

Monitoring Glucose Level in Diabetes

·         Blood glucose monitoring is known to be the way of testing the level of glucose in the blood or glycemia.

·         A blood glucose monitoring is performed by piercing the skin of the finger to draw blood and applying it on chemically active and disposable test-strip of the glucose meter.

·         Different manufacturers use different equipments, but most of all systems measure an electrical characteristic, so as to monitor the glucose level in the blood.

·         It is studied that healthcare professionals advise patients to use proper regime for monitoring the condition.

·         It is very important to monitor the sugar level at least once a day if one has type 2 diabetes.

·         Nowadays, there are more improved technologies for monitoring blood glucose which contains all the standards to care of all diabetic people.

·         Blood glucose monitoring notes changes in anyone’s patterns of blood glucose level and helps them to plan their meals, activities and medications so as to control blood glucose level.

·         Monitoring blood glucose shows any change in glucose level i.e. high blood sugar or low blood sugar.

·         Glucose meters are commonly used for monitoring glucose level. These instruments have a sample size which varies from 30 to 0.3 μl.

·         Monitoring time also varies from 5 seconds to 2 minutes depending on the model you are using.

·         This blood glucose meter is known to be an electronic device with disposable test strips and digital meter.

·         The cost of using blood glucose meters is high as compared to direct laboratory analysis, but it is believed to be more beneficial.

·         Latest developments of glucose meter have 'alternate site testing', 'no coding' systems, 'multi-test' systems or downloadable software.

Continuous Blood Glucose Monitoring

·         These types of glucose meters monitor blood glucose levels on a continuous basis i.e. in every few minutes.

·         In this monitor, a disposable glucose sensor is used under the skin of the patient. A link from this sensor and non-implanted transmitter is used which is directly connected to a radio receiver.

·         Along with this, an electronic receiver worn like a pager which is also known as insulin pump is available in the instrument which displays blood glucose levels on a continuous basis.

·         In this way we can say that continuous blood glucose meters monitor the glucose level of interstitial fluid.

·         Continuous monitoring also allows examination of reaction of insulin with the blood glucose level, food, exercise and other factors.

Glucose Sensing Bio-Implants for Monitoring

Use of long-lasting bio-implant is also important for monitoring blood glucose level in diabetes.

In this way we can say that monitoring glucose level in diabetes can be easily maintained by using the above meters.
