Insulin dependent diabetes or type-1 diabetes is caused due to the impairment of the insulin producing beta cells found in the tail of the pancreatic gland. The process of the damage to the production capacity of body to secrete insulin hormone for the metabolism of the sugar released in the body for the conversion into energy is an autoimmune process which can be triggered due to some viral infection or genetic factors. The prevention of type-1 diabetes ranges from the oral intake of insulin, avoidance of cow’s milk, consumption of mother’s milk to the intake of some medicines
Green tea: The researchers at the Georgia Medical College have proved the efficacy of the anti-oxidant green tea for the prevention of type-1 diabetes. The predominant chemical EGCG was tested in the laboratory on a mouse to study the effects of this chemical on the organism. The study concluded that the delay in the occurrence of this form of diabetes can take place with the regular consumption of a quality green tea. The autoimmune disease can be treated with the intake of the chemical found in a green tea.
Supplementation of vitamin-D: The analysis and systematic study of the American Institute of Diabetes concluded that children who receive supplementations of vitamin D are less prone to damage of beta cells in the pancreatic gland than the children who are deprived of the supplications of the above mentioned vitamin. Continuous supplementation of the capsules of vitamin D was associated with lessening the effects of insulin dependent diabetes in children and preventing it to some extent.
Prevention through drugs:
- Azathioprine: This species of drug prevents the response of T cells of the body to the antigens. A blind survey conducted at the Geneva University on 46 patients who were treated with this drug and its sub-type was studied for a year which proved the efficacy of the drug in initially preventing type-1 diabetes.
- Cyclosporine: The study conducted at the Universities of France and Canada proved that although the drug worked till three months, insulin injections were required after the period of three months.
Cow’s milk: The study at the Australian center of Research studied the fatal effect of antigens present in cow’s milk which damage the beta cells completely. To counter the action, the child should be fed with mother’s milk which builds the metabolism of the child.
Prevention of type-1 diabetes should be accompanied with a diet plan and exercise regime which can be easily attained from a health book or a self guide book.
