Exercise is a physical activity which stimulates the metabolism of simpler and complex molecules into glucose which is to be absorbed by the body cells and muscles. Physical activity increases the rate of glucose utilization in the body which is otherwise found in bloodstream causing diabetes. Long term relaxation and passivity of muscles causes extra deposition of sugar in the body which is hazardous to the patients of diabetes. Exercise in adequate amount and quantity aids the activity of the body and controls the glucose level in bloodstream. The basic rules for the conduction of exercise regime in diabetes by the American Health Association are:

  • Applicability should be carried in the case of patients possessing a blood sugar level less than 250mg/dl
  • Symptoms of retinopathy should not be visible in the patient
  • The sufferer should not bear the diseases related to heart and lungs
  • The body should not be surrendered to any form of condition which prohibits the implementation of exercise in the treatment.

The advantages of exercise in diabetes are:

  • Increases the receptivity of body cells to glucose: The energy utilized by the body during exercise, increases the chance of glucose present in blood to be employed by the body cells for the retention of sound body health.
  • Muscle functioning increases: The increase in the rate of metabolism surges up the response of muscles to the exercise. The muscles in the active and enervated state try to transform the state of glucose in bloodstream.
  • Exercise controls cholesterol which is harmful in diabetes: Diabetes suffer from high risk of atherosclerosis, the deposition of fatty substances in the arteries affecting the supply of oxygen to the heart leading to heart attack and pain. Exercise increases the quantity of high lipoproteins which are beneficial to the patients of diabetes.
  • Exercise, diabetes and hypertension: Hypertension is a condition of increased blood pressure which is a by-product of diabetes in patients. Exercise aids in maintaining the level of pressure in the blood in turn regulating the level of diabetes in the body.

Exercise should be curtailed if the diabetics bear the below listed symptoms:

  • If the insulin dependent diabetes is more than 300mg/dl
  • In case the non-insulin dependent diabetes is more than 400mg/dl
  • The presence of ketones are diagnosed in the blood through a urine test
  • During illness: cough, cold, fever and body pain.

Therefore, exercise helps to keep diabetes in a controlled and regulated pattern. Any change in the medical plan for diabetes should be consulted by a doctor, a health center or a self help guide can be read for the detailed information on exercise and diabetes.
