Diabetic neuropathy is a term employed for a species of nerve disorder which is caused due to the excessive increase in the rise of sugar level in the body. The sudden surge is affected by the imbalance in the production of insulin hormone. The chances of development of this secondary disease increases with age factor and prevalence of longer duration of the diabetes. The National Institute of Diabetes and Kidney Diseases stated in the year 2005 that 50 to 60% of diabetics suffer from some or the other type of neuropathy. Entirely dependent on the body type, neuropathy is speculated by the symptoms it bears:
- Frequency in indigestion, nausea and vomiting
- Sudden numbness, pain and tingling in the toes, feet and extremities
- Either of the two: diarrhea or constipation
- Weakness due to the sudden drop in the sugar level
- Infection in urinary bladder causing pain while urinating
- Distortion in the cycle of dryness and erection in women and men.
Types of neuropathy:
Peripheral Neuropathy: This species of neuropathy affects the leg and arm region developing a sudden numbness or pain in the extremities like toes and fingertips. Many patients of neuropathy are passed unnoticed by the physicians. This causes imbalance in the coordination which is directly connected to the reflex system of the body:
- Impairment in the walking style of the individual
- Loss of sense and feeling of pain and injury
- Development of sores and blisters in the extremities
- Extreme form of sensitivity to touch is often observed in the patient.
Autonomic neuropathy: This affects the nerves associated with heart and other vital organs of the body causing indigestion, respiratory troubles and vision disorder. This result in
- Hypoglycemia causing severe palpitations, sweating and weakness due to the drop in glucose level below 70mg/dl.
- Disruption in the supply of blood due to the effect in cardiovascular system of the body
- Gastro paresis is a stomach disorder in which the stomach is emptied before its scheduled time. It affects the blood supply and sudden rise and fall in the glucose content of the bloodstream.
Cranial neuropathy: This causes damage in the twelve cranial nerves of the brain which monitor and control sight, sense, hearing and taste. Often this type of neuropathy affects the eyesight by causing acute pain in the affected eye resulting in double vision.
Compression mono-neuropathy: This result in the damage in a single nerve causing numbness, pain, swelling in and around the affected region. Carpal tunnel syndrome is the by-product of this disease which causes damage in the median nerve of the forearm.
Femoral neuropathy: Diagnosed in the patients of type-2 diabetes, this causes the nerve damage in front of one of the thigh. Weakness of muscles is a common symptom of this disease.
Unilateral foot drop: This is temporal paralysis of one foot. Compression or vessel disease causes damage in the peroneal nerve of the leg. The condition of foot drop can be cured with effective medication and supplements.
The only way out from the category of diseases mentioned above is to control the level of diabetes, which can be prevented and balanced with the aid of a medical supervision and effective diet and exercise control. A health book can be consulted for the adequate information on the calorie intake.
