Diabetes is a hormonal disorder which can be described as an inefficiency of human body to metabolize the glucose molecules into energy. It results in the rise in the level of sugar in blood which is tested in the form of available sugar found in the urine of the patient. The diagnosis with the aid of a urine test is the traditional and easiest method of glucose diagnosis in the body. The modern development in science and research has given impetus to the inventions in the techniques of blood sugar diagnosis.

  • Prick the finger: This is the traditional method of testing the level of glucose in the body. The patient is asked to prick his/her finger tip with the aid of a sharp needle for few drops of blood. The drop of blood is then put on the thin strip which is placed under a monitoring meter which displays the average level of blood sugar level in the body. This is a general method to test diabetes as the readings are not accurate. However, meters with alternative sites are bearing more authenticity than the traditional meters. The time allotted to the meters for monitoring the disease is 15 seconds. The patient is checked at alternative sites: thumb, finger, knee, upper arm and forearm. This method is appropriate for the patients of changing glucose level in the body.
  • Oral glucose tolerance test: This is the standard technique conducted by the physicians worldwide. The patient is asked to fast for minimum 8 hours and maximum 16 hours before the actual diagnosis is conducted which is followed by a fasting plasma glucose test. With the successful conduction of this test, the patient is provided to drink 75grams or 100 gm (in case of pregnant women) of glucose. The number of blood testing with the aid of a sample is quadrupled. If the patient is bearing the symptoms of diabetes, the glucose will not come back to standard level. The past three days of the test, the patient is asked to eat a healthy diet of 150 to 200 grams per day of carbohydrates.
  • Hemoglobin A1c method of diagnosis:  The provision of this test is based on the scientific logic that hemoglobin is glycated with the increase in the glucose level in the body. If the patient is suffering from diabetes then the hemoglobin test is above the normal level. The standard or normal hemoglobin test ranges between 4 to 6%. As the hemoglobin level surges up, the intolerance of body to accommodate diabetes complications decreases.
  • Urine test: This test is conducted for the information on the presence of ketones with the increase in the sugar level in the bloodstream. This situation is known by the name of hyperglycemia.
  • Laser test: In the year 1998 this test was approved by the American Diabetes Association. The beam of light penetrates the skin and collects small amounts of fluid which is helpful in diagnosing the glucose level in the body.

Multiple methods are provided to patients of diabetes to control the risk of complications in their disease. Followed by the above listed test, the doctor’s advice to the patients is to consult a self help guide for statistical data on the exercise and diet chart to maintain the level of sugar in the body.
