Diabetes nutrition is inclusive of a chain of food items which aid in reducing the fatal effects of diabetes as the disease is entirely dependent on the levity imposed in the selection of food items and exercise regime. It is a set of food items which are to be consumed by the patients of diabetes and which aid in the control and maintenance of the disease.

Consumtion of daily food items:

Carbohydrates: This constitutes the set of starchy and sugary food items. Carbohydrates are divided into two sub-types:

  • Simple carbohydrates: The simple carbohydrates are the easily absorbed into the blood like sugar, milk and milk products, jams, jellies, cakes, pastries and candies.
  • Complex carbohydrates: These take time to break down into the simpler molecules. They raise blood sugar level slowly and are not harmful to the body. This set includes: fresh vegetables and starches.

Fats: Fats are fatty substances which poses serious health problems. Saturated fats are butter, beef, mutton, pork and whole milk which sharply raise the body mass and the cholesterol level in the body. Whereas, unsaturated fats are divided into two classes of fats:

  • Monounsaturated fats: Which can be obtained from olive, camola, rapseed and almonds oil.
  • Polysaturated fats: These are found in sunflower, fish oil and corn. Monosaturated fats are preferred to unsaturated fats.

Dietary fiber: In the year 1979 The American Diabetes Association recommended the intake of fiber for the reduction of diabetes symptoms in the body. The increase in the consumption of fiber decreases the intake and the breakage of food molecules which slowly raises the sugar level instead of raising it sharply. According to the British Medical Journal: “A high fiber diet induced a remission of diabetes in 85 percent of the patients tested” Water soluble fibers like gums, pectins and mucilages are preferred to water insoluble fibers.

Rules of Eating the food:

  • Intake of water and food should not be taken simultaneously. Consumption should be taken after half an hour of the induction of food. Substance like milk, vegetables and buttermilk can be consumed along with the regular diet.
  • Do not fill your stomach fully. Some space should be left before leaving the table.
  • Chew the food very slowly, the more the food is chewed, the more it reduces the intake of glucose in blood.
  • Possession of tension, irritation, anxiety and worry hampers the release of hydrochloric acid which is required during the time of digestion.
  • One should not talk at the time of eating.
  • Consumption of raw fruits and vegetables should not be done at a same time.
  • Principal meal should not be followed with a heavy weight.

For the consumption of nutritious food on diabetes, fruits and vegetables like apple, artichoke, Bengal gram, bitter gourd and broccoli should be consumed along with the intake of mild medication and exercise which helps in maintaining the glucose level in the bloodstream. Adequate information on exercise and diet regime can be obtained from a health book or a doctor.
