Diabetes facts presented here provide a birds eye view of the implications and statistical data available on diabetes. Diabetes is a disease of increase in the level of glucose in the bloodstream due to the distortion in the normal production of insulin hormone which is secreted by the beta cells of the pancreatic gland. Depending on the quantity of insulin produced in the body, the disease is found in two different forms:

Type-1 diabetes or insulin dependent diabetes: This type of disorder is caused due to the decrease in the quantity of insulin by the pancreas. Insulin functions in transporting and converting glucose into energy which is required by the body in performing daily physical activities. The production of insulin is hampered due to either of the two factors: attack by autoimmune system or virus infection.

Type-2 diabetes or non-insulin dependent diabetes: This type of disease is developed in the body when the cells of body start resisting glucose and start using proteins and carbohydrates stored in liver for the breakdown of food into energy. This situation is very common among obese people because the layer of fats formed around their cells obstruct the attachment with glucose molecules.
