Diabetes and pregnancy

Diabetes is caused in the condition of pregnancy with the release of hormones like progesterone, prolactin, estrogen, cortisola and human lactogen which hamper the production and assimilation of insulin hormone secreted by the beta cells found in the tail of the pancreatic gland. The process of increase in the level of glucose takes place during the 20 to 28th weeks of pregnancy which facilitates the commencement of ill-effects caused due to diabetes. This type of diabetes is also known as gestational diabetes.

Symptoms of diabetes and pregnancy:

  • Increase in thirst.
  • Frequent amount of urination.
  • Fatigue.

Causes of diabetes in pregnancy:

  • Women bearing an age of more than 30 are at high risk of suffering from diabetes during pregnancy.
  • Overweight women tend to develop diabetes during their first pregnancy as the insulin produced in the body is not assimilated inside the cells.
  • Women bearing a family history of diabetes are more prone to the attack of diabetes.
  • If the woman has delivered a baby of 9 to 14 ounces in the first pregnancy, the chances of gestational and post-delivery diabetes are increased.
  • Women containing a large amount of amniotic fluid have the chances of suffering from diabetes.
  • Women suffering from high blood pressure are at a higher risk of diabetes during pregnancy.

Analysis of the gestational diabetes:

  • Glucose tolerance test: This test is conducted during the period from the 24th to the 28th weeks of pregnancy. The patient is supposed to drink glass of glucose solution. On the basis of the study of which, the test is declared. After an hour, the blood extracted from the vein of the patient is tested in the laboratory. The subject is suffering from diabetes if the sugar level is found more than 140mg/dl.

In case the glucose analysis is found more than 140mg/dl, the patient is subjected to a 3-hour glucose tolerance test. The patient is asked to consume minimum 150 grams of carbohydrates before 3 days of the actual test. The woman is forbidden to eat or drink anything 14 hours before the testing. The doctor conducts a fasting glucose test which is followed by three to four times check up of the blood sample after the intake of glucose solution.

Treatment for diabetes in pregnancy:

  • A women possessing gestational diabetes should consume a healthy diet maintaining the sugar level of 60 to 120mg/dl.
  • The patient should strictly ignore the intake of sugar in any form.
  • Fiber rich diet should be incorporated in the diet chart.
  • Saturated food items like butter, beef, mutton, cheese should be avoided.

Effects of diabetes in pregnant women to the baby:

  • The child may develop excessive weight syndrome which is medically known as macrosomia.
  • The child may bear hypoglycemia.
  • The new born may be produced with jaundice.
  • The infant may die after the 28 week of pregnancy due to diabetes.
