Cinnamon is a dried bark of an evergreen tree found in tropics which has therapeutic advantages in the reduction of diabetes mellitus. Cinnamon is a spice which is added in food items and beverages. Researchers claim to establish a relationship between the medicinal value of this herbal plant and diabetes.

Development in the recent study of cinnamon and diabetes:

  • Diabetes Action Research and Education Foundation: The funded study enabled Dr. Richard Anderson to study the therapeutic benefits of cinnamon in reducing the amount of glucose in blood. His success in isolating the component responsible for balancing the glucose level in the body has proved advantageous to the study of natural cure of diabetes. The polymer found in this study was proved to reduce the content of lipoproteins by 10 to 25%. The polymer aids in the production of an enzyme which substantially decreases the aftereffects of insulin resistance.
  • University of Pakistan: This research was conducted by Albert khan in Pakistan with sixty people divided into six major groups. The first group was provided with one grams of cinnamon daily for forty days; the second set consumed three grams cinnamon daily and the third group was supplied with six grams. The result after forty days was declared and it proved that the consumption of cinnamon on regular basis visibly diminished the signs of diabetes from 18 to 29%.
  • Study at Agricultural Research Unit in Maryland: According to this research in the year 2000 the components in diabetes which aids in gradually reducing diabetes are: hydrooxychalcone and triglycerides to promote the decrease in glucose level in the bloodstream. Cinnamon helps in the accumulation and absorption of glucose by the fat cells in the body to prevent the increase in the level of sugar in blood.
  • Food and Drug Administration: According to the experts in this organization, there are two types of cinnamon which are available in the market: cinnamon zeylanicum nees cinnamomum cassia blume. But the medicinal value of the type of cinnamon is more in the case of cinnamon cassia.
  • American Diabetes Association: It stated that if the patients of diabetes are provided to consume one fourth tablespoon (400 to 500 milligram) raw cinnamon or in the form of a tablet, significant improvement in the diabetics would be registered.
  • Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice: The recent study conducted in rats by providing 300 milligram per kilogram of body weight for three weeks, proved that the skeletal muscles of these rats were successfully able to absorb glucose by 17%.
