Childhood diabetes is a severe disease in children afflicting their innocence. It takes severe dimensions if not spotted on time. The history of this type of diabetes was not common in children but the rapid increase in the distortion of nutrition intake and decreased physical activity, environmental and genetic factors are the primacy contributory factors of this disease. The report of National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey stated that 700 school going children were diagnosed with diabetes mellitus.
Symptoms of diabetes in children are:
- Increase in the rate of thirst for water in frequent intervals
- Frequent urination often resulting in bed wetting
- Constant feeling of lethargy, dizziness and fatigue
- Sudden loss of weight due to the employment of fats stored in liver because of the breakdown of body muscles resulting in weakness
- Persistent dryness in mouth and on skin
- Symptoms of Ketoacidosis, a state in which the toxins in the blood speed up the process of sugar accumulation in the bloodstream.
- In an extreme case, the pulse rate is acutely reduced which may lead to body collapse.
Primary contributory factors responsible for the attack of diabetes mellitus in children:
Hereditary and genetic factors: This is the major cause of the prevalence of type-1 diabetes in children. If the diabetes gene is found in dominant form, then the child is under the spell of insulin dependent diabetes since childhood. However, if the gene is in repressed form the susceptibility of the disease is automatically reduced. Diabetes transmutes from the first hand relative to the child patient.
Infection and the attack of virus: Studies in the Geneva school proves that diabetes and virus infection are correlated. The Coxsackie’s virus can be the cause of development of diabetes in children. Often, the virus combines with inheritance factors in the generation of diabetes symptoms in the body of the child. The study of Lancet journal proved that the children of 91 adolescent’s diabetics developed type-1 diabetes since childhood.
Food allergy can result in diabetes mellitus: The major contributory agent in food allergy is cow’s milk. Evidence proved that cow’s milk contains proteins which produce an antigen that trigger the autoimmune condition in pancreas in which the beta cells responsible for producing insulin hormone are damaged severely.
Ideal blood sugar level in children:
- In the case of pre-school children, before meals: 100 to 180mg/dl and at bedtime sugar should range between 110 to 200mg/dl.
- In the age group between 6 to 12 ideal glucose levels before level should range between 90 to 180mg/dl; at bedtime- 100 to 180 mg/dl.
- Adolescents falling under the category of 13 to 19 should posses 90 to 130mg/dl before meals and 90 to 150 during bed time.
Treatment for childhood diabetes:
Breast feeing: The research at Helsinki University estimated that children who are breastfed during early months of infancy are saved from the fatal effects of cow’s milk on sugar level.
Diet control and exercise: Parents and school management should take care of the diet and physical activity plan of the children.
- At least 20% of the energy should be provided by a single meal.
- The child should be supplied with adequate snacks between meals.
- For information, a self help guide can be consulted by the parents to analyze their children growth rate.
Appropriate amount of diet and exercise with effective medication under a certified and experienced doctor can help in maintaining the level of glucose in children.

Her recent study on the nutritional and dietary chart of children in various countries has revealed that the major cause of prevalence of this form of disorder in children is due to the lack of information among patents about the proper food plan for an infant. Now such details can be traced in the pages of one of the self help guide available in the market.
