Canine diabetes is a dog disease which is caused due to the damage in the pancreas because of the genetic or autoimmune system. This results in the under or over production of insulin hormone, which is supposed to convert glucose into energy. The disorder caused in the beta cells of the pancreas. The ratio of dogs suffering from diabetes is more in the case of obese and fat species of dogs.
The dog should be diagnosed if the following symptoms are visible:
- Frequency in the rate of urination
- Increase in thirst
- Sudden increase or gain in the weight
- Increase in the appetite
- Loss of water from the body in the form of sweat and vomiting
- Development of cataract
- In the case of fat dogs, ketotic bodies are found in the blood which is an acute condition.
Diagnosis of the disease:
The disease is diagnosed by the veterinarian by conducting a blood test or a urine test. The normal level of sugar found in blood is between 70-150mg/dl, if the diagnosis result in the increase in the level of sugar then normal, the dog then is suffering form diabetes. A diabetic dog contains glucose in urinary content.
The therapies available in veterinary science for the disease of diabetes in dogs:
Treatment through insulin: Insulin should be injected in the bodies of the dogs with diabetes. Insulin should not be given in the form of tablets as it is a protein and would be digested by the intestines. In the case of dogs, methods had been developed for slow absorption of the injected hormone. The three prolonged duration hormone preparations are:
- Lente
- Isophane
- Protamine zinc insulin, Out of these the third one has the longest duration.
High insulin requirement: If mild form of insulin is ineffective in the case of dogs, this high intensity technique is applied when the body has become insulin antagonist. One of the cases of this condition is the secretion of progesterone hormone in bitches, when the body becomes inflexible to the effects of insulin injections.Another case of insulin antagonism is caused in the case of dogs with high cortisol and hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing’s disease).
Dogs with diabetes should be provided with diabetes injections throughout the lifetime. Especial care should be taken with the diet and physical activity of the dog as the level of diabetes keep fluctuating throughout the day. For more information a self help guide is suggested which is applicable both to humans and animals.
