What is Dental Hygiene?

It is a known fact that one would require to take care of ones oral health and oral hygiene at all times. Dental hygiene should not be neglected at any cost or circumstance. With proper dental hygiene worry would never cross your mind about your breath and you can be much more confident than you already are.

What is dental hygiene?

  1. Dental hygiene is all about keeping your mouth clean, germ free along with fresh breath. Dental hygiene in an indirect way is linked to dental health. When one neglects dental hygiene one usually falls prey to various oral diseases.
  2. Practicing dental hygiene would keep bacteria and tooth decay away. When your teeth are clean there would be fewer chances of tooth decay, plaque and tartar.

Poor dental hygiene is caused due to-

Any person of any age can get affected by poor dental hygiene. An oral problem can occur in children when the resistance is low, excessive intake of junk food and aerated drinks is known to be a factor which causes poor dental health in teenagers.

Some simple steps towards dental hygiene are-

  1. Take time to brush your teeth. It would be advisable to brush your teeth for around 2-3 minutes on a daily basis.
  2. Increase the intake of water. Dryness in the mouth causes bad breath. When the mouth is dry, bacteria are known to flourish. When you drink enough water, you would get rid of remaining food particles in the mouth along with stimulating saliva flow. Saliva also helps in the prevention of halitosis.
  3. Sugarless gum is helpful to clean the teeth as well as stimulate saliva flow. Chewing on sugarless gum would aid in keeping the teeth clean.
  4. Include flossing. Flossing helps in the removal of plaque from between the teeth and under the gums.
  5. After every meal it is necessary to rinse ones mouth. Rinsing the mouth aids in flushing out the remaining food particles and keeps the gums clean.
  6. Rinsing your mouth would also aid in the prevention of halitosis or bad breath, which is caused due to eating certain food items, decayed tooth and throat infection.
  7. To keep your teeth clean and white, add a few drops of lemon juice to a teaspoon of salt. Apply the mixture on your teeth and brush well.
  8. Eat a balanced diet. Eating a balanced diet would take care of dental decay.
  1. Include the usage of toothpastes and mouthwashes which contain fluoride as a main ingredient. Fluoride aids in the strengthening of enamel.
  1. Avoid food items which are rich in starch and sugar. Starch and sugar bring harm to the tooth surface.
  1. Make regular visits to dentist and go in for dental check ups to keep a check on oral health problems.

When you practice dental hygiene on a regular basis as a good habit, you would keep yourself safe from oral diseases, bad breath or halitosis, and gum diseases. With good amount of dental hygiene you would not only improve your dental health, you would also have overall good health.
