Relation between Dental Problems and Diabetes

 Diabetes can become life threatening problem, if not treated on time. There are other health problems related to diabetes that can make your condition worse. Problems ranging from cardiovascular disease to brain tumor can be the result of diabetes. However, many people don't know that there is a close relation between dental problems and diabetes. People with diabetes are susceptible to gum disease. Such problems if not treated on time leads to a loss of teeth. If there is gum disease that is severe, it can worsen diabetes due its side effects on blood glucose control. If level of blood glucose is not controlled, chances of gum diseases increase. Sometimes, infections causing gum disease can be the one factor responsible for rise in blood sugar level. Due to this, it becomes difficult to control diabetes. An infection named thrush is caused due to fungus which starts going in the mouth. This problem occurs due to diabetes. Other problems like soreness, dry mouth, ulcers, and cavities are likely to occur.

When there is lack of insulin production in the pancreas, problem of diabetes occur. People with diabetes have a weak immunity system because of which many infections attack at a time. Such infections attack any body part and take more time to get healed. Gum disease like periodontitis and gingivitis are likely to occur. Though infection of such gum diseases grows slowly, it takes time to get healed. If diabetic patients get periodontitis, they can face severe problems. Gums will wear out soon due to the weak defense system.

Relation between Dental Problems and Diabetes

1.       If the body of the person fails to produce enough insulin for controlling blood sugar level, then chances of gum disease are more severe as compared to people who don't have the problem of gum disease.

2.       The blood circulation of the body becomes slow due to diabetes because of which gum tissues become susceptible to infections.

3.       The immunity system of the body becomes weak due to diabetes. This increases the chances of gums to get infected.

4.       Due to increase in glucose level, bacteria in the mouth start growing, because of which gum disease occurs.

5.       Diabetic patients who smoke are likely to get gum disease easily

There are certain signs and symptoms which you must know that are likely to happen in diabetic patients.

  • Gum bleeding simply when you brush
  • Swelling in gums
  • Change in color of teeth
  • Teeth become loose
  • Pus comes from gum
  • Space between teeth takes place
  • Problem of bad breathing
  • Tender gums
  • Gums appear to have pulled away from teeth

How to Control Dental Problems due to Diabetes

It is necessary to control the blood glucose level of your body. Maintaining a good oral hygiene is extremely important, especially if you are diabetic patient. Make sure you visit the dentist every 3 months. Your dentist can start the treatment soon after certain signs are noticed. Try to avoid smoking and drinking alcohol and opt for certain natural remedies that can keep your teeth healthy. It is always better to opt for ways to control blood glucose to get relief from dry mouth which occurs due to diabetes.

It is necessary for the diabetic patients to carefully plan their dental health. Talk to your family doctor and dentist and take medicines accordingly.
