Disorders of TMJ

Disorders of TMJ (or in other words Temporomandibular joint disorder) are related to pain in joints of human skull. The acute pain in this area leads to impairment. This is a problem which comes under dentistry and neurology areas. So there are many approaches to its treatment. The temporomandibular joint is susceptible to many of the conditions that affect other joints in the body, including ankylosis, arthritis, trauma, dislocations, developmental anomalies, and neoplasia. This disorder can affect many other joints in a body. There are several symptoms of this disorder. Here is the list of all possible symptoms of TMJ:

 

  • The most common symptom of TMJ is difficulty in chewing. Person having this difficulty may find if painful to bite or chew ordinary food. The pain is more in the mouth joint and not in the teeth. TMJ disorder makes it difficult to consume food.
  • A person having this disorder can experience clicking sound when opening and closing of mouth. Similar sounds like popping or grating too can be observed with this disorder. If you consistently experience such voices, then it is better to check up for TMJ.
  • Apart from pain in the mouth joint, you can experience pain throughout the face. The part which is more affected is your jaw line. In that area, pain is higher. But you may feel pain all over your face due to this disorder. This pain is dull or aching.
  • You can feel a severe headache due to TMJ disorder. The severity of the pain is higher in the morning. However, there is a constant feeling of headache due to TMJ.
  • Like headache, you may feel constant pain or ache in your ears. Sometimes, swelling of ears can be seen as the side effect of TMJ. Also, this pain is at the peak in the morning period.
  • Due to TMJ, you may feel hearing loss. The acute pain in ears can lead you to this condition.
  • Jaw pain is the most common symptom for TMJ. Your entire jaw line can face the acute pain. Due to this, biting is really a hard task for TMJ patients.
  • Due to TMJ, many people can face the problem of migraine. This is a situation where one can constantly feel severe headache along with nausea. This is also experienced in the morning. Women have more tendencies to fall for this situation.
  • Pain in jaws and overall mouth reduces the ability of the person to open the mouth. So even if you are facing pain while opening and closing the mouth, it is better to check for the disorder.
  • TMJ can cause pain in other joints of your body. You can experience pain in the neck and shoulder. Though these are exceptional symptoms of pain, you have to check for TMJ. Any kind of joint pain can be related to TMJ, particularly for the upper body joint pain.
  • Sometimes you can feel dizzy throughout the day because of TMJ
  • A person can face the situation of tinnitus because of TMJ. In other words, it is defined as ringing in the ears. People experience the perception of sound within the ear when there is no corresponding external sound. It’s not a disease but a symptom of TMJ.
  • Disorders of teeth can lead to TMJ disorder. Damaged or loss of tooth can be caused by the destruction of supporting bone. If there is any malfunctioning of the tooth, the overall relationship between the teeth, muscles, and joints change. This leads to the disorder of joints.

Here are all the possibilities with which TMJ can occur. It is basically the problem in joints which can hamper other joints too. With proper medical therapy, this disorder can be avoided
