A dental extraction implies removal of tooth. With dental extractions you can get relief from any kind of dental problem. A dental extraction is only suited in severe situations like in the case of the tooth being severely infected or the pulp has died.
Information on dental extraction-
Depending on the condition of the tooth the dentist can either go in for a simple extraction or a complicated extraction.
Simple dental extraction-
Before the dentist starts with a simple extraction, he will numb you before he starts with the extraction. Numbing takes places with a local anaesthesia.
Simple extractions involve a very simple and easy procedure. During a simple dental extraction the tooth is removed by loosening the gums in the tooth socket. The dentist takes hold of the tooth with the aid of forceps and moves it till it becomes loose.
The teeth in the mouth are held to the bone by a piece of a soft tissue called the periodontal ligament. During simple dental extractions the dentist gets a hold on the periodontal ligament and breaks the ligament to set the tooth free.
Complex dental extraction-
Some teeth cannot be pulled in a simple manner. Here is where complex dental extraction is called for when the tooth is badly decayed or broken and the dentist cannot get hold of any part for pulling.
During complex extractions the tooth is made to go below the gum line. An incision is thereafter made in the gums around the tooth to raise the flap and expose the bone. Once the bone is exposed, he can get hold of the bone and move it.
In cases where the teeth are imbedded in the bone, the dentist would use the method of drill and chip. Using the drill method the dentist would start drilling at the bone to get to the teeth. Once the dentist reaches the tooth, he would remove the tooth and sew the flap back.
After your tooth has been extracted it is vital for a blood clot to form to stop the bleeding and allow healing.
It would be normal to feel some pain and swelling after dental extraction. You could use an ice bag on the area. You could take painkillers if the pain is unbearable after consulting your dentist.
Along with medication you should also include-
- Plenty of fluids
- Eat only soft and healthy food items on the same day of the extraction.
- Avoid drinking alcoholic beverages and spicy food.
After an extraction, at least for 24 hours it would be vital to abstain from-
- Drinking alcohol
- Smoking and chewing tobacco
- Sucking a drink through a straw
- Cleaning the teeth near the extraction site
- Rinsing your mouth vigorously
To keep your blood pressure low, it would be wise to keep your activities calm for the initial 24 hours.
Dental extractions are a very common dentistry procedure. After an extraction one would require to be patient, as the extraction would take time to heal. After a dental extraction you would be free from your dental problem.
