Dental crowns are also known as dental caps, these caps are used to cover a tooth which is decayed or damaged. Dental crowns look like normal teeth which are placed over a tooth. Dental caps are created away from your mouth, keeping your tooth impression in mind.

About dental crowns-

Dental crowns are made to look just like normal teeth. Crowns are extensively used in cases where the structure of the teeth is very badly damaged and can’t be repaired. Dental crowns are also used when a tooth is stained beyond repair.

Crowns are usually made up of ceramic, porcelain fused to metal and all metal. Some crowns are also made of alloys such as palladium, base metal alloy such as chromium and gold alloys. The porcelain fused to metal crowns and the all metal crowns are known to be the strongest variety of crowns which are used mainly for the rear teeth.

There are three types of dental crowns which are mainly available such as-

Porcelain dental crowns: These dental crowns are also known as all ceramic dental crowns. Porcelain dental crowns are completely metal free, natural looking and most aesthetically pleasing in nature.

Porcelain crowns are not durable and strong in nature. It is advised not use these crowns in heavily used areas in the mouth.

Porcelain fused to metal or PFM dental crowns: These crowns are popular, since they are much more durable than porcelain crowns along with providing a natural appearance.

The drawback of PFM dental crowns is that as your gum line would get peeled the metal part of the crown would start to show.

Gold dental crowns: Gold crowns are only used under certain circumstances such as if one clenches or grinds their teeth. These dental crowns are much more durable and strong than porcelain crowns. Gold dental crowns are shown to provide more longevity than other crowns.

Dental crowns are required when-

  1. There have been instances where you have been clenching or grinding your teeth.
  2. When there has been major tooth decay, which has battered the foundation of the teeth
  3. If your teeth require considerable shape change
  4. Dental caps are also required if you have been a victim of periodontal disease.

Usage of dental crowns-

  1. Dental crowns are used to prevent further damage
  2. Dental crowns serve the purpose of a protective shell for cracked tooth
  3. Dental caps allow a dented tooth to function again in a proper manner
  4. Crowns aid in strengthening of the teeth and provide a better facial appearance.

Before opting for a dental crown you must consult your dentist as to which material would be most suitable. One should always keep in mind that dental crowns are not permanent assets. Before making your crown the dental surgeon would have to take into account factors which are in relation to your jaw movements for various angles and your bite.

Dental crowns are an apt solution to provide a much better fortified foundation for the teeth. With the help of dental crowns you can improve on your oral health and condition.
