What to Avoid during Stomach Upset

Upset stomach is associated with the inflammation of the stomach or intestines. This inflammation is also known as gastroenteritis. It can be caused due to viruses, contaminated food, or exposure to unfamiliar bacteria during travel. Let us now focus on what to avoid during stomach upset.

 

What to Avoid during Stomach Upset?

It is very important to avoid some types of food that can cause more inflammation to the stomach. There are many symptoms which are associated with stomach upset. These are as following:

·         Nausea

·         Stomach cramps

·         Loss of appetite

·         Feeling weak

We can treat these symptoms with the help of proper diet. Following guidelines will help you to get an idea about how to deal with upset stomach.

First 6 Hours of Diet:

·         Avoid eating or drinking anything for at least 6 hrs after vomiting has stopped.

·         Take sips of ice chips or popsicles if you feel thirsty

First Day 

  • Strictly avoid solid foods for at least 1 day
  • After the end of first six hrs, you can start drinking fluids to keep up strength and stay away from dehydration.
  • Strictly avoid creamed soups, milk, etc. as this can increase diarrhea

Second Day 

Now you can start taking easily digestive foods. These are listed as below:

·         Canned peaches, apricots, pears

·         Bananas

·         Toast with jelly

·         Crackers

·         Cream of wheat or rice

·         Rice

·         Applesauce

Third DayIf the condition is better and vomiting or diarrhea has not returned, you can add tasteless solid foods. These are listed as follows:  

·         Baked or broiled lean meats

·         Baked potato

·         Skinless baked or poached chicken

·         Boiled eggs

 

Along with this, you must avoid fatty, greasy or spicy foods and dairy products. If symptoms are still there, consult the doctor as soon as possible.

·         Another simplest way to prevent upset stomach is to avoid eating too fast and too much. Eat smaller amount of meals.

·         Papaya and ginger are known to be natural stomach aids that can easily start the digestion process. Papaya normally comes in chewable tablets. This can start working as the saliva in your mouth dissolves them.

·         Ginger can be found in capsule form which is also an excellent remedy.

·         Try to avoid antacids. Even though they offer calcium, they contain aluminum salts which can cause constipation.

·         Avoid consuming plenty of water during meal time. Water can dilute the stomach acids and enzymes which are important for the digestive system.

·         Sip 7-UP, Sprite, ginger ale, etc. This leads to carbonation which can provide temporary relief.

·         Strictly avoid tomato juice, pasta sauces, tomatoes, and tomato soups

·         Avoid high fat foods. This may increase inflammation in the stomach

·         Avoid red meats in a diet

·         Avoid vinegar and things made with vinegar when the stomach is upset.

·         Avoid French fries or onion rings

·         Avoid fried foods

·         Avoid refined foods

·         Avoid beverages

·         Try to avoid hot foods and drinks

·         Avoid pasta, white bread, puffs, pizza, pretzels, and processed foods

·         Avoid hydrogenated or hydrogenated oils and use canola oil and olive oil.
