What is Meniere's disease?
· Meniere's disease is basically a disorder of the inner ear which results into vertigo, a feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear, ringing in the ears, and irregular hearing loss. A specific attack of Meniere's disease takes place by fullness in one ear.
· A Meniere's episode involves severe vertigo, nausea, imbalance, and vomiting.
· This attack lasts for two to four hours
· Some people experience shocks, and others unsteadiness as a symptom of Meniere’s disease.
· During this attack, the eyes jump which is known as nystagmus
Symptoms of Meniere's disease
Not all sufferers experience the same symptoms. Following four symptoms are most commonly observed in Meniere’s disease:
- Periodic episodes of rotating vertigo
- Fluctuating, unilateral in one ear or bilateral hearing loss
- Unilateral or bilateral tinnitus
- A sensation of fullness or pressure in ears.
This disease often starts with one symptom and then slowly progresses.
Some symptoms of this disease also include nystagmus, uncontrollable or rhythmical eye movements, which is in the horizontal plane.
Migraine
Migraine is known to be the common symptom of Ménière’s disease. It can also lead to greater chances of developing Ménière’s disease.
Cause of Meniere’s Disease
· It is basically an idiopathic which is believed to be associated with endolymphatic hydrous i.e. excess of fluid in the inner ear.
· It is thought that this fluid bursts from normal channels and flows into other areas, causing damage or hydrops.
· The symptoms may occur due to middle ear infection, an upper respiratory tract infection, head trauma, or sometimes by using aspirin, smoking cigarettes, and drinking alcohol. The symptoms can get worse if patients consume excessive amounts of salt.
· Meniere's symptoms can start at any age, and this can affect men more than women.
· Other possible conditions that can result in disease is syphilis, autoimmune disease of the inner ear, Cogan's syndrome, perilymph fistula, dysautonomia, multiple sclerosis, acoustic neuroma, and hyperthyroidism.
Treatment of Meniere’s Disease
· As it is known that Meniere’s disease cannot be cured completely, treatments regarding this focus on minimizing its symptoms.
· In extreme cases, it is important to tear down vestibular hair cells with the help of antibiotic streptomycin

- Antihistamines as dimenhydrinate and meclozine
- Antiemetic such as trimethobenzamide
- Antivertigo/antianxiety such as diazepam or betahistine
- Herbal remedies like ginger root
