Tips on Using Hearing Aids

Learn the Features

In order to learn everything about the hearing aid take your time when you are about to buy it from the audiologist. You must also practice replacing the batteries, cleaning the hearing aid and telling the right hearing aid from the left.

Learn to Adjust

You must learn how to adjust your hearing aid for various situations like in a loud room. You might even be asked to walk outside where there is traffic and have someone talk to you before leaving with your new hearing aid.

Don’t Overdo It

Some individuals find hearing aids uncomfortable at first. Depending on the kind of hearing aid you have, it might take a few days or more to become used to wearing a hearing aid.

My Voice Seems Loud

Using a hearing aid would change how your own voice sounds to you. Majority of the users get used to the change with time and no longer notice it. In this case, your audiologist might be able to make an adjustment.

Background Noise

If background noise or noise which you don’t want to hear is too loud, you might need to have an alteration made on your hearing aid.

Buzzing from Cell Phones

Cell phones could interfere with hearing aids. It’s a good idea to carry a cell phone with you to test it on a new hearing aid.

Practice Listening

Even though hearing aids improve your hearing, they don’t bring it back to normal. You could develop a more positive and effective approach by combining a hearing aid with improvements in your communication skills.

Radio and Television

For best results, you need to find the best distance between you and the television. With your hearing aids on, sit between 5 and 11 feet away (around 2 to 4 meters) from the TV set to a normal level for others, then adjust your distance to the TV and the volume to find your comfortable level. You must do the same for the radio. The closer you are with less background noise, the better the sound you would get.

Different Environments

As you gain confidence, start wearing your hearing aids in a wider variety of environments like work or social occasions. You must practice selecting precise sounds and voices and focus on them.
