Symptoms of eye fungal infection depend upon its intensity. Sometimes, the contact lenses you are using can become a cause of eye fungal infection. It is possible that even if you are taking good care of your contact lens, the risk of fungal eye infections remains. Sometimes, fungi resist the disinfection by contact lens solutions.

- A biofilm of microorganisms can get adhered to the surface, such as a soft contact lens. These microorganisms are bacteria as well as fungi, which produce substances that form a slimy matrix, to stick.

Symptoms of Eye Fungal Infection
· The symptoms caused by fungal keratitis are blurred vision, red and painful eye which remains even if contact lenses are removed.
· On any antibiotic treatment, there is increased sensitivity to light (photophobia) takes place.
· Excessive tearing or discharge
· All these symptoms are in less intensity as compared to bacterial infection of eye.
· Eye infection sometimes takes place due to fungal ulcer known as hypopyon which is white and fluffy in appearance.

Filamentous Fungi
- Aspergillus fumigatus
- Fusarium spp.
- Yeasts
- Candida
Anyone can have fungal eye infection, but contact lenses are more prior to this infection as the environment inside the lens contains contact solution which is favorable for fungus growth.
If one is having any type of eye surgery or injury, they can have a slightly higher risk of developing fungal infection.
Prevention of Eye Fungal Infection
- Your eye doctor can diagnose this fungal infection according to your symptoms.
- Diagnosis can also take place by scraping the surface of cornea for a sample specimen.
- This sample is analyzed in a laboratory for the occurrence of fungus
- Once the presence of fungus is detected, anti-fungal eye drops are recommended to treat this infection.
Here are some tips by eye doctors which will help you to reduce contact lens-related eye infections of fungal keratitis:
- Wash and dry your hands before handling contact lenses
- Rinse the contact lens storage case with fresh contact lens solution and let it air dry.
- Restore the contact lens storage case every three months
- Never mix old contact lens solution in new solution. Throw away the old solution, clean the case and then use fresh solution.
- Wear contact lenses only according to schedules
