Multivitamin is a combination of different vitamins that you can find in healthy food and other natural sources. Such medicines are used to fulfill your body’s deficiency of vitamins. Multivitamins are given to people who fail to take vitamins through their diet. It is effective in treating problems that you might face during pregnancy, digestive disorders, illness, or poor nutrition. Even though such medicines have many health advantages, there are certain side effects of multi vitamins which can take place due to improper use or some kind of allergy.
If multivitamins are taken as suggested by your health care experts, then you will not face any side effects. However, there are some common side effects that are likely to happen.

- If multivitamins are taken without eating anything, it can lead to some gastrointestinal disruptions like constipation, queasiness, or diarrhea. It can also lead to serious side effects like slight headache. If you don’t swallow medicine properly or don’t drink water to swallow it, then you are likely to get foul taste in your mouth. You will also face sleep problems, especially if you take them before going to bed.
- Another common side effect of multivitamin is diarrhea. In multivitamins, high dosage of magnesium is present which can result in watery bowel system. Such problem can happen if you take multivitamins with nutrients that can result in some negative interaction, leading to problems like lack of immunity, weakness, and decreased metabolism.
- Kidney stone is another side effect which is likely to happen. Other than iron and potassium, even calcium is included in multivitamins. If such tablets contain high dosage of calcium, then chances of kidney stones increase. Other problems like abdominal pain, constipation, and heart weakness can also take place.
- If you take tablets of multivitamins with other medicines, it can result in some allergic reactions depending on your immunity system. Reaction with other medicines can result in adverse health problems or some kind of allergy.
- In some multivitamin tablets, the formulation is made in such a way that can increase in problem called hyperkalemia, which is a situation leading to heart block.
- Some multivitamins also contain high dosage of zinc. This can disturb the cardiac rhythm and thus will weaken your heart. If your heart starts becoming weak, it can result in heart attack. Other effects of such multivitamins are urinary problems, teeth staining, gastric, and muscle weakness.
- Certain multivitamin tablets contain vitamins and minerals that cause allergic reactions. It can vary from mild to severe depending on your immunity system. Mild reaction can be hives or itchiness. If you face such effects, then immediately stop using those medicines and consult your doctor. If you experience signs severe than this like chest pain, swollen facial region, breathing problem or widespread hives, then it is a case of emergency.

You are advised not to take any tablets of multivitamins more than the advised dosage. Do not take more than one multivitamin product at the same time. Always follow the doctor’s instruction on how you have to take it. If you take same vitamin products with other multivitamins, then it will result in overdose of vitamin, leading to severe side effects.
Never take such medicines with milk or dairy products, especially calcium supplements. Calcium can make it difficult for your body to take some ingredients of multivitamin leading to serious problems.
Usually, multivitamins do not cause any problem if taken in the right quantity. However, some may cause side effects due to interaction with other medicines or not taking it as advised by the doctor. Hence, if you notice any strange or severe side effect of multivitamins, then seek medical attention immediately
