Role of Vitamin B12 in our body is very important as compared to other eight vitamins as it performs important functions. It is a water soluble vitamin that is also called ‘cobalamin’ that is usually involved in the metabolism of every cell of the human body.

Vitamin B12 can be scientifically produced in laboratories by bacterial fermentation under protected environments. Functions of Vitamin B12 are very important as it includes things like DNA synthesis and its regulation, fatty acid synthesis and energy production. Hence, it is essential to maintain a healthy body and appropriate internal and external body functions.

Why is it Important to have Vitamin B12?

Vitamin B12 helps the conversion of homocysteine into methionine, whereas its insufficiency leads to rise in methylmalonic acid and homocystein level in body. Therefore, it is important to have Vitamin B12 because a balanced diet helps to maintain all the nutritional requirements of an individual.

Fat soluble vitamins easily get stored in the human body; whereas water soluble vitamins like vitamin B12 get washed away. Similarly, in times of emergency, the body produces fat soluble vitamins, but it is not possible to produce water soluble vitamins. In such cases, a deficiency of vitamin B12 can arise that may hamper the overall well-being of an individual. Therefore, intake of the required medicinal supplements becomes necessary wherein consulting a doctor proves beneficial.

What is the Role of Vitamin B12 in our body?

Vitamin B12 consists of biochemically rare element called ‘cobalt’ that plays a major role in the metabolism of proteins and fats, utilization of carbon dioxide and synthesis of nucleic acids. It also supports the nervous system to maintain a correct communication between the brain and other organs. For example: proper coordination for visual, aural and other similar sensations. Moreover, the formation of adequate red blood cells helps proper circulation of oxygen to different parts of the body. Hence, it is very essential to have a proper balance of Vitamin B12 to prevent its deficiency. Otherwise, it may lead to imbalance of biochemical effects in humans.
